Need to backup my Marshall head

So, my experience with my Vox made me realize... I need to back up my amps.... I guess, for the time being, my 15 watt squier head will be my Vox's backup, not half as nice, but it does the job. But I still need something to backup my Marshall. Now, I was thinking my Kustom III bass head was good enough, but... I'd rather something with a nice onboard distortion. I was looking at Plexi's, too clean and way out'a my price range. The AVT's are much too brittle. I'm thinking of a Kustom Quad 100 head, how do those push the Marshall type tone? My bud's got a Quad 60, it sounds pretty cool. What's the Crate GX900 sound like? I'm not looking to spend more than 200 on this, it doesn't need to sound great, just decent and be reliable.

I was thinking... and I feel dirty about this... how does the old Rogue Tuberider head sound like? I mean.. it's a hybrid, so, it may sound decent, right? and pretty cheap, right?

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

Sorry, mate, but I really know nothing about guitar heads at that end of the price spectrum. Never tried any, and wouldn't know the 1st thing to recommend to ya.

*Bump*

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

If you want a 'cheap' Marshall copy, that's all tube and gives a similar tone (remember that given the parameters you have, you WONT get an alltube Marshall...), then I'd suggest looking at the old Sovtek heads. Still find them around at very reasonable prices...

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

An older Crate Excalibur head would be good, or even a Peavey Transtube Supreme.

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

If your amps are good in the first place, you won't need a backup.

I believe Pete Townshend switched over to Marshall in the early days because they were reliable. Nowadays, most people that gig with Marshalls usually have to "check up on them" as time goes by to prevent problems.

Townshend liked em because they were LOUD lol. I use older Marshall's, and yeah, I give them a ' check up ' every now and then. Not because they aren't reliable, more like ' preventitive maintenance '. Really, you should do this regularly with all your gear, especially if you depend on it for a paycheck......:)

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

Funny story about amps: Me and my bud went to the local amp tech to buy tubes. My ud bought a pair of 6L6's and I bought a pair of EL34's. The amp tech then went on to ask me if I like Marshalls. I said yes. He then said "I bet you have a high-maintenance, temperamental, bitchy girlfriend." My friend said "Yes, he does."

Anyway, Peavye Transtube amps sound very nice for te price, and Duncan's right. THe Mig 50's and 100's are oing for rediculously low prices for the quality of sound they put out.

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

you might look for a peavey rockmaster head. they seemed to be "voiced" off of the "uk sound" to use peavey's words.

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

About those Sovtek heads... how much are they going for? Maybe thats a better bet than the JCM900's ive been thinking about...?

you can snag a Sovtek for under $400.

WOW! And the tone? any other brand of amp it's comparable to? hows the cleans / crunch in those amps?

that may have made my day!

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

My friend's Mig 100 makes me think of an old JCM800 with a tighter botom and a touch more sparkle (it runs on 6L6's). Its a LOUD amp thrrough a Marshall 4x10" sealed back cab.

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

yeah ........too bad, scott F just sold one in the trading section for $220 i think it was.........ah well

i think there pretty cool amps, played a mig50 once

I think I may go with the Sovtek Mig-50. I'm assuming it's 50 Tube Watts.

I'd go with the Mig 60 if you want something that sounds like a Marshall.

Re: Need to backup my Marshall head

I need more wattage than 50 or 60 watts... I'd have to go with the mig 100 to compete with the singer and bassist in my band (im sure most of you have heard the problems ive described perviously lol)
