Need Wiring Help

Hey, all.

I recently picked up an Ibanez RG7321 on the cheap because it needed some electrical work that the previous owner was not willing to do.

Long story short, I finished the job, and the bridge pickup (which is a Seymour Duncan SH-8 Invader 7) sounds great. The neck pickup, on the other hand, buzzes and sounds like ass. It's thin and screeching.

Electronics-wise, I have two humbuckers, two pots (one volume, one tone, no push-pull or push-push) and a three-way blade toggle.

I followed the schematics from the Seymour Duncan Support section exactly, save for one connection. I have no idea if this is necessary, but a normal toggle switch has four wires attached (neck, bridge, hot, ground). The blade lacks a ground. Is it supposed to have a ground wire attached? If so, where? I don't know if that is the source of the problem, though.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Need Wiring Help

A Switchcraft-style three way selector switch should have a ground wire connected to the metal chassis. Usually, there is a terminal loop eye at the opposite side of the switch to the pickup and output connections.

The generic SE Asian lever selector switch supplied in many budget Ibanez guitars is of the eight contacts in a line persuasion. Some of these have a soldering eyelet fastened with a small screw. Others have a metal exterior to one side of the switch. These are where to ground these switch types.

I switched the stock switch for an Oak Grigsby, but it still has the eight-in-a-line soldering lugs. I'll have to look around and see what's going on with it and where I should attempt a ground wire.

Hopefully that cures the problem with the neck pickup.

Thanks.
