I have my 80s squier HM. H-s-s with a licansed floyd. It would be well within the budget. I played it for 16 years with no issues so it is not going to be a throw away guitar.

I have a New York Pro strat copy that like new. I bought it for my daughter when she kept wanting to play with "daddy's" guitars.
Guitar gets excellent owner reviews on Harmony Central and would be perfect for a beginner. I can even get it well under his budget.

Dang Jacob, I will be coming through TN Friday !
My digital camera is dead, but I have taken the strings off mine and cleaned it up (had a lot of dust on it in those other pics) so it looks a lot better now. If hes interested I will snap some more pics for him next week when I get back

Here's some more for your student. The strings ar ebroken in but by no means old, and thepickups are a pleasant moderate output- rock tone.
It is super light but also very resonant, and if he chooses to keep it and upgrade, it would sound AWESOME with a dark pickup set like a 59er neck and JB bridge. THe only flaw is a dent in the metal control backplate.
Oh, and if he has concerns about playing it while sitting down, he shouldn't worry becaus ethere are several positions to play a V comofortably while sitting. On the upside, it is so light that it is very easy to play while standing.
