Nefarious Dimarzios

Doing some shopping for used pickups & I came across this Dimarzio set that someone took the trouble to scratch off the model number. Do you guys have any idea why someone would do that?

To claim that it's a popular model for resale reasons when it's really a less popular model? Who knows why ...

Maybe the DiMarzio forum could help with some ideas. Buddy is a good guy and always happy to help. But it seems unlikely that anyone but the culprit would know why the model #s were scraped off.

If you need help identifying what models you have there, contact DiMarzio via phone after 12 noon EST and ask for tech support. They will probably need the DCR readings and might ask you to send in some photos. But at least you'd know without a doubt which ones you're dealing with.

Re: Nefarious Dimarzios

I'm pretty sure I've seen this exact set for sale. Assuming they are the same set, they came out of a guitar purchased from Ed Roman, and Ed Roman liked to pretend that his stuff was special and that no one else could get it, see his "black back" duncans for another example. Dimarzio said these are likely Tone Zones as that was the bulk of what he purchased, but I think the ad said they read closer to PAFs. I also believe the ad said that after dimarzio was notified he was defacing the pickups model numbers they stopped selling them to him.

edit: found the ad.

I obtained these Dimarzio's in a guitar i picked up a few years ago. The guitar was rumored to have been a replica built by Ed Roman guitars.
The pickups are legit Dimarzio's as they are stamped on the back, however the model number has been removed.
I sent photos to Dimarzio and they confirmed they are legit and also confirmed that they sold a bunch of pickups to Ed Roman ten years ago, but stopped supplying them pickups when it became known that they were removing the model #'s.
Dimarzio told me they were most likely Tone Zone's DP155, as that is what they sold to Roman. Dimarzio said they could positive ID the model if i sent them the DC resistance of the pickups, which i did not because i didnt have a use for them.

So that is the story. Very good condition. lots of lead on them.
Thanks

UPDATE:The resistance is 8.78 ohms across red / black. these are 4 wire pickups. pole spacing is .4" center to center on the pole pieces. both pickups have the same pole spacing.

Yeah those where Tone Zones that where defaced by Roman. Also for Dimarzio's the ohms reading should be taken across the Green and Red as red and black are only one coil.

Hey I liked Ed. Yes, I have heard the stories but he was always cool with me. Cool with me, I'm cool with you.
