Neil Young's Amp?

Re: Neil Young's Amp?

Fantastic site mate !!!

So, here is the $64 Million Dollar question !

How does he get the distorto-sound in the beginning of, "Hey Hey, My My" (into the black), from the WELD album ?????????

Does anyone know the TRUE ANSWER ?

Re: Neil Young's Amp?

Sounds like his guitar goes to two amps. One is his usual heavily distorted sound, the other sounds like the poor thing is about melt and ooze iself off the stage. Unless its that Wizzer thang....turning all up to 13!

Re: Neil Young's Amp?

Hey Hey My My--- Mutron octave divider + Deluxe...
...also uses a line out from the Deluxe into an Magnatone and a Baldwin Exterminator...

Re: Neil Young's Amp?

Ah great, thanx mate !

I'll see if i can get some on eBay tomorrow !

. . . ermmmm, what is a Magnatone & a Baldwin ?

And do they stll make the Mutron ?

Re: Neil Young's Amp?

Mutron is long gone, but a basic octave divider will do the trick...

Magnatone made tube amps from the 50's to the 60's; used EL34's in larger models, had true vibrato on some, as used by Lonnie Mack, Link Wray, etc.

The Baldwin Exterminator – SS, 28" x 14" x 481/2", 100 watts RMS (250 peak), two 15", two 12", two 7" speakers, two channels; reverb (depth), tremolo (speed, intensity), volume, treble, bass, three-way Supersound switch, five-slide Supersound control. You gotta see it to believe it...

Re: Neil Young's Amp?

Bugger . . .

. . . don't think i'll be able to get any of those over here !

We do get a sh!te-load of real crappy Marshall MG S/S amps over here - don't supose that will work ? (wink-wink)

OK, so i will just carry on with my octave devider a meanasphuk custom Fuzz-box ! (...it is the closest that i will ever get, but is not too bad, beleive it or not !!!)

One day, i too will ahve a KICK-@r$e set-up !
Just have to rob 10 000 granny's comming from the bank

*take another swig at the coffee mug and re-thinks*

. . . hold on, make that 100 000 granny's comming from the bank !

Re: Neil Young's Amp?

More-Gear-Than-Skill, Thanks for this thread! I spent some time yesterday poking around the linked sight and got a lot of insight from it.

It got me so horny to play guitar, I was able to crank a couple of new "Neil Young"-like sounds from my favorite wunder-pedal...a Home Brew UFO fuzz/octave.

:)

SirJack, I like your train avatar. I remember well over ten years ago on TV, I saw Neil playing with his large electric "toy train" set at his home. Awesome! He was really into it, and loved to see his autistic son enjoy it as much as he did. I think this is the only time I've ever seen Neil without a guitar.

Thank you "Sludgenutz"

If you would like to know more about the "blue train", in my avatar, feel free to look into it !

Even National Geographic knows about it !

Just like Neil Young, I too love trains, but more the Steam Trains of days gone by ! I also prefer analog stomp-boxes over digital. I shoot whenever i can, on film, and try not to touch a digi-cam, i develope my pic's in a darkroom, and handle Photoshop like the proverbial . . . .

. . . OK, that's enough !

Re: Neil Young's Amp?

I think the country you live in is beautiful. I do not think I could afford the trip on the Blue Train!

Incidentally, I live in the Southern California, and travel up-and-down the world famous (among railroad junkies) Cajon Pass on my drive to work everyday. The rail traffic is not passenger oriented, but there are numerous loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong freight trains that take goods from the Pacific Rim (China :smack: ), and transport them across the US. I tried to get a link that would show the beauty of the Cajon Pass' dry chapparal (low bushy, scrubby foliage) but was not able to. The elevation rise is from about 900' to 4000' feet. Sorry, my metric conversion abilities are usually better other than on a Friday night.
