Neodymium magnets?

Whats all the buzz about? I've heard guys swearing up and down that pickups made from these magnets are the greatest metal pickups ever.

Re: Neodymium magnets?

Neodymium magnets are from what I hear the most powerful magnets out there and expensive, usually used in high end microphones and some high end speakers. In the speaker context they're alot lighter than other magnets.

I don't know anyone that's put them in humbucking pickups. I heard some companies using them in stacked noise cancelling strat pickups. I think I heard they generate too much string pull, and that's why not many companies, have used the neodymium magnets.

Re: Neodymium magnets?

Tom Anderson uses them in some of his pickups.

His design is called a Tall pickup and the magnet sits BETWEEN the coils not under them.

You wouldn't say Anderson guitars lack tone ! :friday:

Re: Neodymium magnets?

Neodymium is rare-earth magnet. Its magnetic force is permanent unlike ceramic and Alnicos. People usually use Neodymiums to magnetize their Alnico and Ceramic magnet.
Naturally they are much stronger than them. As JMH mentioned they have strong pull on string and they are mostly preferred for Humbucker. Fender started to use them in their American made guitars for noiseless pups. I have not heard one myself so no clue on how they sound. Lots of details and useful info here

Re: Neodymium magnets?

So neodymium has magnetic strength of Doom™, and thus not only output, but string pull of Doom™ as well. What about throwing a neodymium bar in a pickup with PATB bobbins? Wasn't the PATB bobbin designed to negate or at least combat string pull? Or is neodymium so strong that that the PATB bobbin setup would make string pull worse, somehow?

Re: Neodymium magnets?

I have an Anderson HN2+ bridge with neos, and its sitting on the shelf. I did a review some time ago. It sounded completely conventional, yet very stiff in mahogany. It sounded like the First Wave of British Heavy Metal, without any thickening/echo via studio. The string pull was less than a conventional ceramic humbucker, perhaps because Andersons are built on Telecaster-sized tall coils.

HN2+ and a 490R:

I think neos, in my hobbyist experience with them might actually excel at live performances where cutting through the mix with an elevated presence makes a diff...just as V30's are killer live and open (I don't care for V30's in a closed room).

People who play Tom Anderson guitars, are more likely going to be professionals and live players.

Anyone heard of/tried these?

$48.00 a pair.

I just ordered them to try out...can't go too wrong at that price.
