Nephilim - Shay returns with thrash

Heyo, been a while since I posted anything, let alone a clip.

Here's a nice garage-thrashy tune with equally unhinged vocals. Tried to cop the over-wah'ed clumsily played lead thing Slayer does. Dunno, might replace them with leads more my style for the final :friday:

Edit: Uploaded one with the vocals brought down in the mix, thanks to Beer$ for pointing it out

It might not be because they're old style thrash vocals. It might be because they're too loud and the inflections are a bit odd.

People who don't produce music only know that they don't like something, but not usually why. The music is good though.

the goofy inflections are intentional, but the level observation is interesting. I felt like they were too low before i brought them up in this mix. Guess i'll listen through a few different sound devices and stew on it :friday:

Re: Nephilim - Shay returns with thrash

You were right. For some reason i guess the headphones i use to mix leveled everything out. Listened in the car and on the surround sound to find that the vox were hilariously loud. Uploaded a new mix where i just brought the vocal tracks down a bit.

Re: Nephilim - Shay returns with thrash

Maybe put a subtle delay on them as well. Have them run in sync with the temp at quarter notes and make sure it's not noticeable as "delay" in the song but makes the vocals a bit more "majestic". Use the hi pass to make sure it doesn't muddy up and use the low pass to blur them into the background nicely.

Awesome ****, man!

Sounds like you went to the James Hetfield school of vocals. :D

How did you record this?

very good advice, sir. while by now I know how to get instruments where i want them i have barely any experience with mixing vocals. i'll try these out

lol thank you sir. I was trying to go for the Tom Araya thing with the phrasing and delivery but i think my raspiness brings out the Hetfield :p
Vocal mic was an MXL 990 into an M-audio mobile pre. Guitars were just run direct in with Poulin (lepou) VST's.

now i just need to get around to doing a bass part

hoooo! man that bass makes everything so much more frantic. Thanks man! looking forward to adding this in and doing some tweaking of my parts to get a polished final

Re: Nephilim - Shay returns with thrash

Thankyou fellas! I got the performance perfect on the DI and then spent a good while reamping it in the mix and getting the perfect sound. I wanted it to blend in with the guitars but also have a good presence to it and while it's totally up to Shay to how it sounds next, I'm pretty happy with the result.

Re: Nephilim - Shay returns with thrash

I don't care how old this thread is. This collab was fun and I want to do another.

Re: Nephilim - Shay returns with thrash

I just completed my diploma course, got new bass strings and have a GoPro so I can do that last thrash song I said I would play on. Any other collab ideas you have, hit me up and I'll do the same. That final mix of Peanut Brittle sounds amazing by the way, I'd love to get high quality version.
