Never finish recording a song

Hey all so I've got this little problem. I get in the mood and super enthusiastic about recording a track and it starts off well and I get a basic chorus and verse done on guitar and ezdrummer but that's as far as I go. I wrap up and come back to finish put bass in and make alterations and one of two things happen. I don't like what I've done and delete it or never get back to the track as I'm not in the same frame of mind or mood and my minds choice of what sounds good changes.

How do you guys come back to a track a day later to finish it and still like what you've done and get into the same vibe. I've got heaps of unfinished tracks cause I just lose the vision for that particular track and get a vision for a new one. How do you guys combat this problem........ if it's a problem for other people at all!

Enthusiasm and inspiration sometimes will only take you so far - and then discipline has to kick in. It takes a level of commitment that I seem to lack as well.

I have eight to ten songs in progress right now and usually the inspiration to create would have been strong enough to drive me to complete any one of them except for all the distractions that life throws at me.

I enjoyed a movie called "Finding Forrester". In it Sean Connery's character said that the key to writing is to write. Translated for you and I that means finish the song. Let it flow good or bad, and then go back to fix it. You can easily lose interest if you're trying to make your "rough draft" into a hit.

Good luck - at least you're recording. I have a deadline to complete three songs by October 1st, and I haven't even finished the lyrics on two of them yet and haven't even begun recording.

Taking a song from idea to finished product has stopped so much music from getting out there. I think a lot of it has to do with going from it being 'play/fun' to 'work'. Maybe the best idea in that case is just use a commercial studio; there is no requirement that you self-produce. Or, find someone who is getting started in recording/mixing, and is looking for projects to hone their chops.

Now that I think about it, there was a great seminar at last year's AES show in NY that was about this very subject. The author a really interesting book about self-production had all sorts of great methods for overcoming obstacles. I will try to find the book/author and post back.

I have half songs everywhere! Usually I will send these off to my bandmates and then we take it from there...collaboration is under-valued today IMO.

I agree with the discipline line...sometimes you just have to open it up, play along and see if something else strikes you. If not, come back to it later. I like when I can come back fresh and have a different perspective on it than my original vision...its sort of like self collaboration!

ya collaboration is ideal, way easier and quicker

otherwise just make deadlines that are reasonable, like:

"in the next two hours I will record the guitar tracks. I will not 'redo' them."
