never set a paul up before... help?

Ok... so I put a set of .10's on my paul... and the neck actually bent backwards enough to cause terrible buzzing on me low e (which is a .42) so I played with the truss rod, but it did next to nothing. I turned it to the left so much that it actually came out.... then I turned it back to the right and it went back in... I don't get this... are pauls differant than strats in the way the rod works? Cuase this never happened on any of my fender's.

Then to top it off, to stop the buzzing, I had to put a .46 on it and then raise the bridge to an uncomfortable hieght... so, I'm'a take it in to a pro if I can't figure it out...

HELP?!

1) Go to a pro & have him set you right.

2) Buy a Dan Erlewine book before doing further setups.

Good luck, bro.

Since it probably came with 9's, why would the neck bend backwards when 10's were put on. It seems like it would bend forward. If you install 10's, and the trussrod can't accomodate them, there's something really wrong. Exchange it, or exchange into an upgraded model, or something.

Re: never set a paul up before... help?

just a more obvious suggestion:

did you take off each string slowly?

if you take off all the strings really fast the neck is sure to bend back.

10s would make the neck bend forward if anything.

my epi lp standard never had any problems in that area - I screw around with string gauge all the time, never touched the truss rod, and I can get low action with any type of string...

I had a pro do a 50$ setup awhile back, but I always just screw around with the action to get it to a point where it is low and the string buzz is almost non existant or at least tolerable.

I agree with everyone who posted.

1. Take it to a tech.
2. When you get it back, mark the truss rod nut with a pen or fingernail polish or something, so if you monkey with it again, you can always have that point of reference to go back to.
3. Next time, don't turn the truss rod more than 1/4 turn per day.
4. Might want to practice set-ups on a lower end guitar that you can risk damaging. Leave the LP for the tech or when you're feeling very confident. It took me 3 years to start monkeying with mine - and for awhile I wished I hadn't.

I had my LP Studio 4 Years before I dared touch the truss rod, and like you said for a bit I wished I didn't too, but now I know what I'm doing :burnout:

Re: never set a paul up before... help?

Take it to someone who knows what he´s doing, now.

A back bow with 10s is usually a sign of either an overtightened rod or a warped neck. If you REALLY were able to remove the rod from the neck (and not just the nut, which is more common), then I can almost guarantee you that the neck will need major repairs, as vintage style trussrods are fixated at both ends so that they can work at all....

Sorry for the possible bad news.

Re: never set a paul up before... help?

actually, I can setup strats, SG's and Fender basses in a few minutes. Usually I can get a guitar to play like silk.

Also, the neck was strung with .11's, I believe.

Anyway, I'm taken' it to a pro tomorrow afternoon.
