New 112 cab day

So I was looking for a 112 extension cab and was considering the PRS MT112, but for at $500 I didn't think it was really worth it. First of all it wasn't deep enough IMO, and second, although I love Vintage 30s I didn't want one in a single 112 cabinet because that usually doesn't end up sounding good IME. (That speaker can get a little boxy in a little box)

So I found this Peavey 112, and thought it was a steal at $160 ($120 US)
First of all it's deeper than the PRS and most all 112 production cabs at 11.5". So big bonus right there.
It's also all 18mm plywood and has front baffle bracing as well as internal corner bracing. This thing is built ridiculously good for the price.
Dimensions are 17.5" H x 11.5" D x 20.5 W.
My 5150 III 50w fits perfectly on top. My MT15 and Hotone micro amp too.

The speaker, originally came with a 40w Blue Marvel, but now it comes with Scorpion.

My original plan was to swap the speaker anyways so that was kind of a non-issue. But then I plugged it in and the stock speaker sounds pretty darn good lol!
I'm going to be picking up on any Eminence Governor as well as a pair of G12T75s this week, so I'll see if I can get that back off and swap them just to experiment.

So yeah, a real little sleeper of a cab that sounds really good, is built really well and, wait for it......

Made in China!

Re: New 112 cab day

Try an MC90

You can find em on CL for $40-60 quite often, it's good in open and closed backs and alone in 112 situations, and it slays the t75

PS are you sure that's 3/4" / 18mm ply? Looks like 1/2" to me

Re: New 112 cab day

There aren't any MC90s available local right now, and here, those would go for close to $100 on the used market.

Yes right, 13 mm ply not 18, and I'm wanting to try a less efficient speaker in this cabinet, and although the T75 gets a bad rap, a lot of it has to do with people's inability to EQ their amp properly for that particular speaker in my opinion. The reason Marshall uses that speaker is because you can pour on the mids without them getting gnawing or brash sounding.

I don't like a dark sounding 112 and I like the fact that the T75 has nice top-end sizzle. Also, certain speakers midrange frequencies in a 112 cabinet can get boxy sounding really fast. The T75s flatter mids allows you to add in mids of you choosing. The speaker also has a pretty stout bottom end. We'll see...I'm going to go pick up a couple of them in an hour for 60 bucks each. ($45usd)
If not I'll keep them for another project or get my money back on them later.

Re: New 112 cab day

T75's make all pickups sound like the EMG 81 slept with their momma 9 months before

Thats what some metal guys like and many people don't

Re: New 112 cab day

Thanks for coming out dude, even though no one respects your opinion here.

Re: New 112 cab day

So did you get the cabinet new
Cause I looked at those the other day on Amazon
And the ones they had listed came with blue marvels
The scorpion speaker was the ones prior to that I believe

Re: New 112 cab day

This is brand new with the pointy Peavey logo. Manufacture date says June 2018.
I'm having a real hard time getting the back off because it is so tight, and there is nothing to grab onto. But now that I'm looking at the front of the speaker, the dust cover does look more like a Blue Marvel than the larger Scorpion dust cover.
The speaker actually sounds great, so if I don't end up getting the back to come off, I'd be perfectly fine with leaving the stock speaker in there.

Re: New 112 cab day

My buddy got a Classic 30.with the marvel in it
His 80s Bandit had a Scorpion, that was horked up when he got it
He had put a.CRex in the Bandit
When the C30 showed up he thought the CRex would be better in the C30
So he swapped them
Now he has the marvel in the Bandit
And the .....well you know

They both sounded good where they were and sound fine where they are
The Crex is a bit warmer than the marvel
But it could just be the ear wanting to hear a difference

To me the marvel sounds great

I think they went scorpion, then Sheffield, then Marvel actually

Re: New 112 cab day

This thing so good I might just order another one.
I've always scoffed at 112 cabs and have tried to get along with many 212 cabs, and was never satisfied. Something about there directional sound I think.

At this point I really think two 112 cabs would sound better than one 212 cab. Especially if you can separate them a bit and angle them slightly inward towards you.

I originally wanted to do this with two Mesa Theile cabs, but not at the $1,400 price it would cost me.

I've been a believer in a good, ported 1x12 since the first time I heard a Bogner cube. They're a bit steep @ $400-500, but my Egnater Rebel 112X sounds almost as good at a fraction of the cost once loaded with a decent speaker.

Re: New 112 cab day

Yeah I can't get any Bogner stuff here and the wide body Thieles are $699 each... The regular Thieles are $599...:blackeye:

Re: New 112 cab day

I have a 1x12 convertible cab, currently in close back configuration, with an Emi C-Rex.
Love it.

Re: New 112 cab day

So I got home from work this morning and the cabinet had warmed up after initially being in the cold delivery truck and the back panel came right off. You can really notice the cab's depth more in this photo, so many 112's are only 9, 10 or 10.5" deep.
The speaker is blank with no markings on the frame or cone.

Re: New 112 cab day

That kinda looks like a Blue Marvel without a label. If it sounds good, it is good, though.

Congrats! I have an Orange PPC112, but it is kinda boxy-sounding, like you said. I replaced the V30 with a Creamback, and it was better, but I ended up moving the Creamback to my 4x12 because I liked it so much and moving the V30 back in. I still kinda want to replace that speaker, but I can't find the Creamback for sale locally anymore. Bummer, lol.

Re: New 112 cab day

Well I found a coupon code so I ordered another one. It ended up costing less than the first one.

Oh, and more detailed inspection revealed the cab is in fact 18mm plywood, the exterior edging is mearly tapered to 13mm.

Wonder how the Peavey compares to the Harley Benton
I found the Peavey on Amazon for $129
After shipping and import fees, it's less than the Bentons

I think
I have never ordered anything from Thomann

I know they have a 35 dollar fee and then shipping

Re: New 112 cab day

It's a blue marvel:

I thought 11.5 depth was quite standard. The Harley Benton cab with v30 (their house brand) which I have is 11.5 and so is Palmer etc..

Anyway, looks like a great cab!

Yes, most descriptions say Blue Marvel, but lots of owner reviews state theirs did not come with one. So you really have to be careful with item specifications listed by retailers.

For instance the Harley Benton is listed as 229 mm deep which is 9", and looking at the photo it does not look 11.5" deep. Where as you say it is. Sometimes you just never know until you have one in front of you.
This cab also has a lot more interior volume(space) than the Harley Benton, which makes the Peavey similar to the PRS MT15 in that regard, which I like.

$129 US is $170 Cdn, which is what I paid, so being that you're in the States I would think you would be able to get it for a better price than that.

Re: New 112 cab day

Also for size reference, I'm not sure the Benton would fit a 5150III 50w on top as well as the Peavey.
