New 112 cab day

Re: New 112 cab day

That does fit perfectly
But that are from the same manufacturer
So there's that

I like Peavey stuff
They used to be made next door in Mississippi

But most production is Chinese now

I could get used 1 x12 under $100 and it may well have a Scorpion or Sheffield in it

But the odds that the speaker is in bad shape are high

The cabinet should be bulletproof though

I have a marvel in my VIP2

Hmmmm

Re: New 112 cab day

No not the same actually, Fender vs Peavey.

I'm really impressed with this chinese manufactured Peavey cabinet.
I, like most of us have seen and used lots of the old USA Peavey stuff. Looking at this cabinet it looks like the exact same quality as their USA built cabinets.
They do say that these products are designed in the USA and manufactured in China. So it's not like the Chinese are having any influence in the engineering aspect of the product. But it's an age-old debate and I've seen some poorly manufactured Chinese stuff too. Mainy from other brands though. Peavey seems to be getting it right with their overseas manufacturing that's for sure.

Re: New 112 cab day

Yes, most descriptions say Blue Marvel, but lots of owner reviews state theirs did not come with one. So you really have to be careful with item specifications listed by retailers.

For instance the Harley Benton is listed as 229 mm deep which is 9", and looking at the photo it does not look 11.5" deep. Where as you say it is. Sometimes you just never know until you have one in front of you.
This cab also has a lot more interior volume(space) than the Harley Benton, which makes the Peavey similar to the PRS MT15 in that regard, which I like.

Nope it's listed as 299mm:

Equipped with: 12" Celestion Vintage 30

Power rating: 60 W

Impedance: 8 Ohm

Housing material: 18 mm plywood

Semi-open back

Rearloaded

Trim strip

Carrying handle

Dimensions (W x H x D): 460 x 470 x 299 mm

Weight: approx. 14 kg

Design in black Tolex

So it's 18,1" x 18,5" x 11.7" which makes the Peavey wider indeed but not deeper :)

Re: New 112 cab day

Right my brain read it wrong! What are you playing through that cab? Is the V30 working for you in it? I'm going to try a Governor in one of my Peavey's.

Re: New 112 cab day

Currently nothing :)
I have an Eleven rack that I'm playing though my Yamaha monitors currently because I don't have a power amp yet. But I'm guessing I will be needing a more neutral speaker to go with the 11rack

Re: New 112 cab day

If that Harley Benton cab is really all 18mm ply, that's a hell of a good deal, even after shipping. Of course, plywood doesn't necessarily mean good plywood but still, the Celestion speaker alone would cost as much, or more than the cab.

Re: New 112 cab day

Yeah those HB cabs are a steal :) there's also one with another celestion that's even cheaper

Re: New 112 cab day

Well I swapped the Blue Marvel with a G12T75 last night and the results are great.

Although the BM sounded good, having present and somewhat complex mids and good crunch, it is not a metal speaker. It lacked lowend, had no real depth to it.

The T75s lows are massive in comparison. The magnet is much heavier as well so that's no surprise. But in the big picture, the T75 magnet isn't that big compared to its counterparts.

The flatter mid-range character of the T75 really let my MT15s mids be able to open up and breathe. Interesting enough the speakers attack and treble response reminds me a lot of Greenbacks. There is a balance of both smoothness and aggressiveness in this speaker. Super chunky in this cabinet. Makes it sounds bigger than it actually is that's for sure.

Strange it's not used in more 112 cabinets. Although I imagine it's not because of its low efficiency compared to more popular speakers like V30.
But I like it's low efficiency, I don't want it to be too beamy. I've gotten enough daggers thrown at me from using V30s for years. Lol. (Still my favorite speaker regardless tho)

t75 and k100 are great models for small cabs, 112 and compact 212 designs, closed, open or ported.

I haven't liked the vintage models (including v30) in any small cabs, and I do like them in everything from an oversize 212 on up.

The "vintage" in V30 is such an oxymoron though... unless they're approaching it from a generalist speaker builder's vintage=major tonal coloration/antonym of 'reference", there's really nothing remotely vintagey about it

Yeah I should have said "mid-boosted" instead, or maybe "classic", even though they're not any more definitive.

The origin of the Vintage 30 and it's namesake are easy to source on the net.
In 1986 Celestion set out to create a higher power handling Alnico Blue.

I always thought they called it a 'Vintage 30' because it was supposed to be a higher power handling G12H which handled 30 watts. Vintage 30s don't sound exactly like a G12H, but they're definitely coming from a similar place tone-wise.

In developing the Vintage 30, Celestion made pioneering use of Laser Doppler Interferometry to analyse the cone behaviour of an original 30 watt Celestion Alnico Blue.
We could then form a precise model of that vintage speaker's characteristics and apply it to a speaker design using new materials for greater power handling.

It was found that Celestion's H magnet came closest in performance to Alnico. This was partnered with a new cone and new coil assembly employing modern materials with similar mass and physical properties to the originals, but better able to handle the extra heat generated through operating with higher power equipment

Re: New 112 cab day

That's all well and good.
Anyone know about 12k-100's?
And where I can find a 16ohm version without having to trade a kidney?
