New 2017 Gibson CS 336s just released

I own both a 336/356, so I'm pretty excited to see these. Especially since I'm moving the blue 336 I have. They combine qualities from an LP/335 into a brilliant love child. Kinda of a more airy/woody/articulate Les Paul. It has 335 charm, but it can't achieve the deep low end. At the end of the day, they do their own thing.

They look amazing. Makes me optimistic that Gibson can still release great guitars. I personally wouldn't buy these new, but I'm definitely going to be on the *look out in the used market. All mahogany, with a chambered body. P90s. And TV style finishes. Personally love the TV White and TV Black Gold.

Curious to see how they sound. Should be warmer and I dig the simplicity of the p90s with a wraparound. Maybe a more refined Les Paul Special? Don't know, but can't wait to play one.

Unless you don't care about intonation, it could be fine.

*I* wouldn't even consider buy any instrument that doesn't allow me to intonate... it's 2017, you know?

Re: New 2017 Gibson CS 336s just released

Yeah, I'm not one for the older wraparounds. They're catering to the tradition crowd. I personally throw on Graph Tech Resomax bridges on any wraparound guitar.

Really dig the TV White and TV Black finishes...but the price is out there for me.

Re: New 2017 Gibson CS 336s just released

Yeah, for sure. I think if they made these in the $1800-2500 range, they'd sell like hot cakes. CS up charge. I see 336s sell for $1800-$2600 used. They don't resell well. I'm for sure looking at one used. Probably within the next 1-3 years. I can wait :D

Cool. The black gold kind of reminds me of my Godin Montreal Premiere, except it's a single cut. Agree though, the price is insane.

The best thing about this guitars was learning about this Resomax bridge! Thanks a lot, I also dislike wraparound that don't allow intonation.

^ Lol. No problem. Just note that the NW2 with string savers will sound a tad warmer than say a NW1. They also will make notes sing more. Great upgrade imo.

That price is funny, for what would be a student model if it were made back in the 60s. I don't like paying for something like that that I'd have to swap the bridge out for it to play in tune. The tuners seem sort of cheap, too. So they might need an upgrade.

Re: New 2017 Gibson CS 336s just released

I glossed over the tuners. I've had those kluson tuners before. They get the job done and I can't recall an issue with them. The price is laughable though. Despite the quality from the Custom Shop, this one is overpriced for sure. If they priced these like the early 339s, I'd be all over it.

Yep. It's insane. I think the tuners are ok. And, the guitar may well intonate with that non-adjustable wraparound. Hell, it better for $3800. But, Godin puts the Graphtech Resomax NW1 fully intonatable wraparound bridges on a $900 model (Core CT). In fact, they were putting them on the earlier version of that guitar which listed for $100 less. That Graptech bridge lists for about $150. Of course manufacturers don't pay that much and there are less expensive intonatable wraparounds than Graphtech.

Point being, Gibson seems to like to try to compete with themselves in terms of how much they can overcharge for a guitar.

I own a few Gibsons, and I'm pretty happy with what I have, but I couldn't justify spending that kind of cash for that product...

Re: New 2017 Gibson CS 336s just released

I like Gibson's too but unless one is made of money, you gotta draw the line somewhere. Some of their offerings are beyond hard to justify in terms of price. Dealers were blowing out Midtown Standards at $1000 a few months back. But they listed for $1300. Aside from the Midtown being a flat top, someone would have to explain to me what makes the 336 worth $2500 more.

You honestly have to wait for the right moment to get one. All the Custom Shop guitars (4, I still own 3) I've gotten from them have been worth it. I've bought them used though. Easily saving myself about 30-40% of what it would be new.

Edit: I for one am going to patiently wait until these get blown out (judging by inflated price) or they start coming out used. As said, these guitars hold bad resale value sadly. I personally love them.

Exactly! They're made of mahogany and rosewood. The 336 chambering shouldn't be all that much. It's out of hand.

That's just it, the Midtown Standard is chambered as well, not laminated. Obviously the Custom Shop stuff is upcharged, and I'm sure some is justified, but still.

Re: New 2017 Gibson CS 336s just released

Typical Gibson tactic...Make a "student" guitar, call it "limited run" and/or "custom shop", and slap an outrageous price-tag on it. Then depend on it to sell because of the name on the headstock. Even many of you in this forum will buy it (either new or used) for that very reason.

Re: New 2017 Gibson CS 336s just released

OT, but curious, what is the sonic difference between a 339 and 336? I'd think the 336 sounds even more like an LP.
