New 335 User needs advice!

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

I just ordered a Seth Lover Bridge (for bridgr position).
For the neck... well, a classic 57, a Seth Lover, or i will try to lower the stock neck pickup.

I will change Pots, caps and switch.
can you recomend me the best Cap value to use with Seth Lover a 500K pot's? 0.22? 0.47?

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

What pickup do you have in the bridge? You want to make certain that if you are keeping the bridge pickup that whatever you put in the neck will work & balance with the bridge. Arealy nice combination in this type of guitar IMHO is a JazzN & 59B. But a set of 59's would also be great. I personally think the Seths would be to dark. Pearly Gates would work too!

In the bridge i have a stock pickup. It is very thin... i don't like it! So, first i will change the bridge first (because i get one at good price). I think i prefer
A2 pickups. 59 is too mid scooped to me... But maybe a try it in the neck position...

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

Well... I decided to order a Classic 57.
My set will be:
- Neck Gibson Classic 57
- Bridge: Seth Lover SH-55B

What do you think about my set?

Why did you choose this combo? The neck p'up would most probably overpower the bridge one... and soundwise, one is gritty and loud, the other is even and creamy smooth... dunno, not the best of matches, if you ask me.

Because a tested a sheraton ii (my friend) with a 57 on the neck, and a love that soud (not gritty at all!)).

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

Gibson 57 classic is a pup that in my opinion will give you the best of both worlds! (sorry SD)

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

well, the 57 is out of stock, so i can't get one.
I tryed PG neck, and it is to bright to me. I think i am a Alnico 2 fan...
So, i will try to move the seth lover B (sh-55B) to the neck position, and try a 59B on bridge...

Do you think is a good combination (balanced...)?
- SH-55B (On neck)
- SH-01B (On bridge)

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

Do yourself a favor and get a Phat Cat for the neck and before you even install it swap the mags to A4's or A5's. Not that hard. I did this to my Epi Dot And it is awesome. I was not going to replace the bridge pup, but when I heard the Phat Cat compared to the stock bridge pup there was no choice. Day to night. At the time I was going to replace the bridge for a gib classic 57 but they were on backorder allover so I got another Phat cat on the bridge. Maybe I should have waited. As far as hum, I get none.

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

i had a 59 in the bridge of my sheraton for a while, it sounded good but was really bright. so if i changed guitars and kept the same amp settings it was shrill in comparison

And phat cat with stock magnet? It is a goos choice? good clean jazz and blues tone? I don't have much experience with P90

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

When I first got the neck phat cat I installed as it came from stock. It was a huge improvement over the stock Epi buckers ("57 classics"). Huge. A lot more clear and bright. But you always look to improve tone, at least I do. It could get a bit muddy with distortion, but still I believe less than a neck humbucker would. I had heard guys here replacing magnets and thought that was very complicated. Got some good advise specially from "Blueman" and went for it. It is actually very easy, and I did that with the pup already wired to the guitar and very little room to work. Thats why I say do it before you wire it.

What mags did you put in, and how do you like them?

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

Did A4/A5 polished. The A5 closest to the neck. Sounds real good so no real need to change, but......... sometimes I wonder what 2 A4's or two A5's would do.

BTW Blueman...... what do you think of a gib 57 classic plus @ bridge compared to the bridge phat cat with 2 A8's I have?

Re: New 335 User needs advice!

To me, saying a neck humbucker is too bright is like saying the stars are too bright; I've never met a neck bucker I would call anything like "bright".

If you like A2, try a Seth or A2pro and probably make it a bridge model. Phat Cats are cool, the neck model's on par with an A2Pro neck model, EQ-wise.

A Phat CatB with two A8's is going to have some horsepower. Nice mids and warmth. But A8's are a little stiffer and less dynamic than the other common alnicos. I have a pair of A8's in a Phat CatB in an LP.

Does the '57 Classic Plus have an A2? If so, they can have an odd 'ribbony' high end to my ears. Rounded treble on top, but still kind of thin. Of course, output is on the low side.

If the '57 Classic Plus has an A5, it's going to be bright and scooped, not much in the way of mids. To me, the treble needs some taming from a roughcast magnet (A5 or A4) or a couple 250K's.

'57's are very good PU's, I have a couple, but I've swapped magnets in them.
