New Acoustic (with a pickup)

I'm looking at acoustsics, and like any stereotypical guitarist does, i love taylor and martin. However, the martin sound i like is too expensive, so at the 1000 dollar range (plus or minus a bit, not etched in stone), I'm really feelin a taylor. I was hoping someone might know how the 110, 210, and 310 compare. obviously, each one is a little more expensive than the last, but when i read about their stats and stuff, I don't really know how to interpret the information. of course, no store has all three or even two of them at a time so I can't try them out my self. any info?

thank you

Play as many acoustics as you can in your price range regardless of the name on the headstock. As far as pickup systems go, get a guitar without one and put your fave magnetic in the soundhole ( I use a Fishman Rare Earth humbucker in my Alvarez 5047).

Re: New Acoustic (with a pickup)

Never go shopping for acoustic guitars (or any guitar for that matter) with a brand name in mind. Simply get your hands on as many instruments as you can and let your ears tell you what you like. Once upon a time I went shopping for an acoustic and thought for sure I'd be leaving with a Taylor. I walked out with a Takamine and $400 richer than I would have been had I bought the Taylor. ;) So ignore what the headstock tells you.

You could possibly save a little coin or get a better guitar for the money if you looked for one with an on board pickup. That would allow you to more easily upgrade the electronics in the future. Obviously, if you do play acoustics with on-board pickups and preamps, make sure you play them unplugged as well as plugged in. I've played a few very nice A/E electrics that were great unplugged but the on-board electronics were awful. I've also played some that were the exact opposite.

That said, I understand the desire for on-board preamps for both ease of use and because you know what you're getting when you buy the guitar. That, and the under-saddle pickup systems and mic'ed systems have always sounded more natural than soundhole pickups to my ears.

I went Martin / Taylor shopping once (and had never heard of Guild) and went home with the sweetest guitar on Planet Earth!

2nd on Guild. The new ones from Tacoma are good, & used ones are a steal.
