New amp... all tube, metal...

Stratologist
So far I was thinking about either the Peavey Classic 30, the Ashdown Fallen Angel 40 or even 60, the Fender HotRod Deluxe or a JCM800 combo...
Thoughts? I'm looking for a thick distorsion, Zakk Wylde ish, with a trebly tone (a bit like Children of Bodom) though of course I'd mess about with it a lot.
Right now I have a 40 watts Peavey SS (envoy) that I use with a POD 2.0 and I'd most liikely use this tube combo with a boost pedal and some other analogue effects.
I live in Europe, i.e no decently priced Mesa Boogie...

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

I'd say a Laney AOR and an SD-1. A thicker, more ballsy JCM800 tone, for less than 300 bucks!

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

I can't see those anywhere on their website, are they discontinued?

I'm pretty sure they quit making them in the 80's. Killer amps for the price. I've heard some nice metal tones from one of these being hit by a good OD pedal. Of course, it WILL be an Ebay excursion..

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

Would a Laney VC30 do the trick for metal too...?
Any other advise is welcome

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

You're thinking of combo amps?

I would recommend the JCM800 + an overdrive pedal in front of it.

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

I'd rather go the not used way, it'd be cheaper compared to a JCM800 as well :( Do you think I could get a good metal tone out of the Fallen Angel or the Laney, or even the Fender?

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

I would icksnay the fender for a metal tone, it would have killer cleans, but I doubt it would gain up the way your looking for. If you can though, I'd check out the peavey classic 50, it'd be comparable to a hot rod deluxe, it'll gain up alot nicer though, if i'm not mistaken, satch used one for a while???? A classic 50 and an od pedal should do it for you,

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

My advice is save your money and wait.

A Classic 50 or some other small POS amp will not satisfy you in the long run.

And I'm talking about as a fellow metal player, not as a tone snob.

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

Wait for what though? I won't ever need a head and cab, and I don't really care for Mesa Boogies, I won't put this much money into an amp ever. It'd take me a lot of of time and there's plenty more I could buy and get similar tone.
I was planning on getting as well an MXR micro amp to use with whatever combo. To get a slightly heavier tone. And yeah, the Deluxe's gain is weak :p I thought that with the pedal maybe... eh who knows.

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

Good Call TO,50's are great ampss, but if your looking for a very long term amp . . . spend the money once

TRUTH.

I wish I'd followed this advice earlier in my playing. I've been playing 10+ years and only now have the amp of my dreams. I started on a solid state Crate, moved to a ss Fender, to a Tubeworks head with a tube preamp, to an all-tube Marshall (TSL 60), to the Peavey 5150, up till now...

...Now I own a Mesa Road King, and I really wish I had just saved up enough to buy one of these years ago. It's the ultimate amp for metal, IMO and just eats everything else with possible exception of the Diezel VH4.

Some good stuff to look for if you can:

Diezel Herbert or VH4
Engl Savage or Powerball
Framus Dragon or Cobra
VHT Pittbull
Heck, even a Peavey 5150 (6505) will get you a good, trebly metal tone (if not much else) for about $900 US brand new.

If you just wait and save up your cash you'll have a lot of good options open to you.

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

Yeah I was very tempted by the 5150 but I have a repulsion for sig stuff... Would the combo give me the sound? And in the UK they are MUCH more expensive and I have no source of income as of now (student) I was also thinking about the ENGL, my friend has the one channel version of the er... balls. It's really cool. I don't now anything about Diezel, I've never seen any here in the UK :(

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

Id say go for the laneys.. they are made there in the UK so you might benefit more from that.

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

just get a modeler. they're cheap and you can get all the tones from one that you will ever need. of course there will be differences, but if you don't want to drop the cash on a good head and cabinet, you must not be very discerning. i agree with twilight odyssey...save your money and buy EXACTLY what you want. waiting for a good amp is waayayyy better than having a crappy one.

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

I do want a head and cab... But I am a student and I shall live in a flat next year with friends, and other flats next to mine :p A half stack or even just a 2x12 would cost me ****loads more than a tube combo and I'd never need it as I don't intend to gig... Those amps I listed are exactly what I want really, I'm not interested in Mesa Boogies or other ultra expensive brands.
I already have a POD 2.0 as well... At first I wanted a line 6 Flextone III but now with the pod... No point for one really :D `

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

Ok bad news, I found out that tube amps sound much better when LOUD. So that means no tube amp for me :p Maybe I'll buy a tube poweramp and run the POD through it before going to a small 2 x12 or 1 x12.
I tried the DSL401 and I didn't like it much.
I tried a Peavey XXL though and wow. That's a solid state amp. But WOW! It screams. Great tone out of it. Not too expensive either for a head. But yeah it's a head and I don't need it. Maybe their combo shall be as good?
The ideal solution would be to get one of those atomic amp. 20 watts, with a tube in. I shove my POD, run a pedal to control it all and I get a pretty decent set up through it. It would probably sound more than decent too. I think I'll do just that. Thanks for the help anyway!

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

i recomend you try the combo version of The Peavey XXL since it should sound pretty identical to the stack(just not as loud) or Maybe a Marshall Avt150, i dont think valve amps need to be LOUD to make them sound good, they just kinda sound better loud, i have a Peavey 5150 and i love the sound of it, its perfect for metal imo, the thing is kinda loud even at its quietest but it sounds good/awesome the instant that sound kicks in. Try the laney Lc series, if you arent going to be gigging maybe a Laney Lc15R would do you fine £195 and loud enough for inside a flat easily.

Re: New amp... all tube, metal...

Buy an Atomic amp. That amp was distinctly made for a POD to be run through it ;)

You don't want to spend a lot of money, you don't need a really powerful amp for gigging, and you already have half of the equation... for you it should be perfect.
