New Amp Day

Back in the 1990's I played a Marshall JCM 900 Dual Reverb on the road for years . It sounded pretty good but I always wanted a Dual master Volume and it's my favorite Marshall. Well last week I was in a local shop and stumbled on a JCM 900 Dual Master Volume 50. What flipped me out was it was not a head but a 1/12 combo!! I had played several of the heads but never knew they built this amp as a 1/12 combo. What a little BEAST of an amp!!
I spent quite a while with it in the shop last week and just couldn't stop thinking about the tones I had gotten out of it. I saw the guys in the shop had listed it on ebay today so I called them up and we cut a deal.

Tomorrow I pick her up!

Re: New Amp Day

I used to rock a 900 2 x 12" combo, wonder if this is the 1 x 12" version of that. nice looking amp man!

I ran a Dual Reverb 1/12 back in the 1990's but this Dual Master is very different beast.
This is absolutely the first 1/12 version I have ever seen of these. I have seen a few 2/12 100's and only a couple 2/12 50's but never a 50 watt 1/12. Super compact amp and pure tone machine!! There is no clean channel or reverb but it cleans up SO well with the guitar volume who needs a clean channel for what I'm doing! The second master lets you dial in a big time solo boost with more hair. These EL 34 powered versions of the JCM 900 Dual Masters are my all time favorite Marshalls for pure rock and hair metal tones!!
These are MUCH MUCH different sounding amps that the Dual Reverb JCM 900!
I actually am looking at selling the Prosonic combo now that I have both this one and the Zinky Blue Velvet. My Prosonic is listed in the sales section here as of last night.
I plan to buy another Prosonic head for the bigger gigs where I need both a bigger cab a lot of power and a clean channel at some point though. I can't see not having a Prosonic around for long.
The Zinky is what I have been running since I bought it as the Prosonic just needs more volume than I can use playing where I do to really get out of the buzzy low volume tones and sing.
If someone here wants a real monster metal or rock rig in a 1/12 take a hard look at my Prosonic combo!
She will send any Boogie Rec combo runnin home ta mama with it's tail tween it's legs!

Re: New Amp Day

ah, I think I had a dual reverb then (I used to use a distortion pedal, which ended up changing the sound pretty much anyway).

Re: New Amp Day

I always thought the 900 Dual Reverb sounded cold and sterile, but the Dual Master Versions and SLX were tighter and more organic sounding.

And now that I have absolutely no need for another Marshall type amp, nor the spending cash, I'm seeing incredible Craigslist deals on 900 Dual Master MKIII's.

Re: New Amp Day

Amp sounds GREAT but I have a problem. A REALLY nasty problem seems a cat has been using the amp as a litter box :earl::earl::barf:.
The lead to the speaker was coming apart and you have to pull the back panels to get to the speaker connections. When I did I saw a white stain in the bottom of the amp and when I stuck my head down there to get a closer look :34::earl:

This is a comical point of contention between Jolly and I. He feeds pets, even neighbors' pets high grade steak and salmon, and I don't want animals anywhere near me or my gear. LOL Don't want 'em, don't like 'em. I don't want crap, pee, hair, or claws anywhere near anything I own.....furniture or gear.

Re: New Amp Day

First Ascension, I feel for you for the issue you ran into.

But, once you get that 900 straightened out some CELESTIANS will make that thing heavenly.

You may even put some of those tubes you like in it, the EL34L's. ;)

I swapped several speakers into it last night. I have Vin 30's , Heritage and the stock 75 watt Celestians on hand + a WGS Vet 30. No contest the WGS Vet flat buried all the Celestians in this amp big time! I also swapped in a full set of 1960's production NOS Baldwin labeled 12 AX7's. She absolutely screams -- unfortunately it also stinks BADLY when it gets hot!!

Re: New Amp Day

Got a call in to the guys I bought it from and if I can get some $ back on it I may do just that.
Big time different from both the Zinky and the Prosonic.
Cleans up SO well with the guitar volume and does that edgy bright jangly stuff really well + can rip if need be. This one has that classic mid heavy clear as a bell cranked Plexy but at sane volumes Marshall tone in spades!
Head to head for the really heavy stuff however the Prosonic just rips it apart. I had forgotten just how BRUTAL a Prosonic could get through a 4/12 till last night when I cranked them both side by side through the same cab.
I may just sell the 88 Carvin V220R to cover the Marshall and keep that Prosonic after all. The thing is just flat a brutal metal MONSTER!! I also love that Clark Kent thangie as it looks and sounds like just another mild mannered Blackfaced Fender combo-- that is till you hit that channel switch and melt everyones face off!!
The gain level is MUCH higher than the Marshall and the clarity bottom end THUMP and tightness with the Prosonic is simply amazing. It just doesn't do that edgy bright modern worship tone thing well that doing what I do I need so often right now.
Now I remember why I keep coming back to Prosonics and wonder what the heck was I thinking selling the only one I own right now :smack: ???
