NEW AMP DAY!

I just bought a Carvin Nomad (50watt 1X12), with tweed covering. I needed something that's lighter weight than the Crate VC5212 I have, but with the same output. This one can also take an extension cabinet whereas the Crate can't.

Can't wait. UPS is supposed to deliver it by this Friday. Unfortunately, it's supposed to rain pretty good here on Friday, so we'll see how that goes.

Re: NEW AMP DAY!

Congrats.... I had a Carvin Xamp. Which was a clone of a Boogie 50 Caliber. It was a good blues amp but I felt it was unreliable. Even using it at rehearsal it would start to make weird noises when it get heated up. So I gave it to Chris to keep in the shop. Its great for the shop, it is 6L6 tubes, warm tone it has overdrive channel and as long as it doesn't get too loud its fine. I took it to Richie a few yeas back and he said the plate voltage on this amp is unusually high and that could be what was causing it to get noisey as it got louder. But as with the old 50 Caliber I found it really difficult to get a good sound out of both sides of the amp. If I had a great clean sound the OD was to dark, once I got that where I wanted it the clean channel was not right so it just made sense for me to get rid of it. I hope you have better luck then I did. Carvin makes some nice stuff in general...

Re: NEW AMP DAY!

Thanks guys.

Dave, the Nomad gets great reviews and the sound samples are decent. So far I haven't found any major negative reviews. As long as its a solid amp with good tone, I can always monkey with a different speaker or tubes if I need to. The speaker it comes with is supposed to be very similar to a Vintage 30, but we'll see. I'm loving the WGS Green Berets in the Crate, so if this amp needs a tweak in that area, I'l go with a WGS Veteran 30.

Re: NEW AMP DAY!

I am incredibly jealous. The Nomad is one of the amps I would buy and not try and change out for something else. Maybe a BelAir. :). Congrats and I hope you hate it and want to trade it to me for whatever crap I can offer. :D

I'll keep that in mind (LOL).

I didn't go with the Belair because of the weight issue with 2 X 12" speakers, (like I have with the Crate), but that's supposed to be a great amp too.

A v30-esque carvin speaker? Cool... What's the name?

Currently looking all over the place for some deals on v30s or smthn of that type, and with their low resale & high quality, I'd loooove to add some carvin product to my shopping list

Check out the Warehouse Guitar Speaker "Veteran 30" I think they go for $69. Can't beat them, and they sound amazing. The Carvin one is called the GT-12.

Re: NEW AMP DAY!

Congrats man. I have owned several of the vintage series Carvin amps over the years and they are really nice rigs. The only negative I can say is they get a little muddy and sloppy at really high amp gain levels on the Soak channel without mods. Otherwise they are simply fantastic sounding amps with great clean to classic rock tones that have for me been solidly reliable.

A Vet 30 in a Nomad will likely be a little muddy and loose. I know both those amps and that speaker well as I have owned several of both. On the other hand the WGS Retro 30 is brighter not so scooped in the mids and tighter than the Vet and should be a really good fit for that particular amp.

That's nice to hear. Thanks. The Classic Rock and Blues tones are what I'm after. I'm not big on high gain.

Blooooody hell :-/ ...just missed their 15% off black friday thing.

Totally knew about them, too, but was somehow under the false impression theyd gone waaaay up in price - not the real 2x increase, but boutique through the roof pricing....weird

Thanks. That's a good suggestion

Re: NEW AMP DAY!

The great thing about Carvin is that you can never go wrong with their guitars or amps. I'm not a fan of their speakers, but they're decent speakers. I have heard the Nomad with some good speakers and it sounds awesome. Congratulations.

Their bass amps are great too. I'm assuming their pa stuff is similarly good. They have a charge card thru them and man I can not get one of those....

Yeah I've been wondering about their pro audio stuff. One thing I have been looking at is getting one of their wireless systems so I can clean up my cable mess.
