new amp... mark 4 or mark 3?

what would be a better amp suited for progressive rock. and pretty much every style of music in between?

i know JP used the mark 2 and mark 4, as well as triaxis's and road kings and rectifiers, etc. etc. but i know he used ot be big on the mark 2's. and from what i've heard, alot of people say the mark 3 is similiar to the 2 in tone but alot cheaper!
what i want is clarity and an overall smooth tone. if i can get one for cheap enough i think i'd probably get a head just so i can have the halfstack and look cool :laugh2:

what do you guys think?

I really hate Mesa for the most part. I especially hated the Mark IV I tried out. Too many controls and options, not enough tone (even after thorough tweaking). Mark III definitely nails Metallica type stuff and the sound clips I've heard does metal and progressive rock very well, so I'd go for that.

Well, the MarkIV's Lead channel is voiced after the IIC+ Lead, so....

Mark III. 1/3 the price, 1/3 the friggen crazy options and crap you DONT need. Eq's? that should be in the FX loop!

well the III comes with an eq too

i like that option but the 4 is a bit to much though. though i do like being able to put it in tweed mode to drive the tubes more :headbang:

i'd also like to add that i like a nice singing lead tone
something that can handle nice thick rhythms and has a nice cleans

I had a Mark IV and a Mesa Quad (Mark IIC+ and Mark III preamp). I HATED the way the Mark III sounded. The Mark IV is the better amp, IMO.

I have a MK IIC+. I had a MK III. THey do not aound anything close to the same. I have not played a MK IV. If you want the smooth singing lead tone it will not be the MK III (IMO, I owned one). I would look into the MKIV.

For lead sound check out the GTR solo on "Falling Away w/ You"

It was done using channel 2 (not even the high gain channel 3) with all half and lower power switches thrown so to really push the tubes)
