New amp (More Mission Amps content!)

Re: New amp (More Mission Amps content!)

Rid, you are right my man...best OD tones EVER

Hoss...I had tweed GAS for a long, long time and to be honest the wait was worth it! I can't say enough good about this amp...I can't wait to get speakers for it so I can really get the full package.

T4D...it's really a one or the other type deal with the channels and as for the SFX-03 Im sure it would work but this amp sounds great as is...the idea with Tweeds (at least for me) is to have an amp that all you need is a cord and a guitar and you're set...so far this one does it. It won't do loads of crunch but has the most beautiful natural overdrive I've ever heard. I know exactally what Lew means when he says it's like squeezing toothpaste from a tube...the guitar and the amp become one big instrument and every little thing you do changes the tone a little...this is the most touch sensetive amp I've ever had the pleasure of plugging into, and Im so glad it's MINE!

Re: New amp (More Mission Amps content!)

You guys know Bruce is my brother, right? And Bruce based that amp on my own '51 Tweed Super. I have some photos of it but can't get them to download onto this page. Keeps telling me the photo is to big...but I'll try again.

Conrats Christian! I know you've been wanting one of those for a long time now.

The way I use mine is to plug into the #1 input and then adjust volume one for the overall level and then turn up volume two to about 7 or so...it doesn't add volume as much as "girth".

You just play around with volume two until you hit that sweet spot where the tone fattens up but doesn't really get louder.

Anyways, tweed Supers are my favorite tweed amps...those and late 50's tweed Deluxes.

Again: CONGRATS! That's gonna be a keeper for the rest of your life I'd think!

Re: New amp (More Mission Amps content!)

one thing about the tweed amps - at least the originals ... is the combination of parts came together just right.

they were not really high gain amps - remember, at the time, Fender was going for clean, and people just didn't turn up as much. the first preamp tube is a 12AY7 - not that high gain. However, the original speakers were lower powered than most of today's speakers, so when you crank the volume, you get a combination of moderate power amp over drive, and speaker breakup, therefore, these babies SING, and they are very touch responsive.

There's Lew!

You were right...I love this amp and Bruce's work is second to none.

Did you take a look at the pictures? It came out real nice so far...I've gotta get those speakers for it, then it'll be done but I can already tell you it's a keeper for sure!

No 12AY7's here...big bottles baby!

Thats true about the parts comming together just right...Bruce used all the same (right) parts in this one and it shows. Im going for very close to period correct speakers so it will still sound right but be able to handle a bit harder playing than original...Leo would have never run this amp as hard as I am!

Im think that the early 50's Supers might be the only V front like that but Im not positive...
I think there were also the Gibson GA-79 or something like that and the Watkins Dominator. I love saying "Dominator."

That looks like it's going to be a killer amp.

I think the big bottle preamp tubes sound better than the little 12ax7 type tubes. They're physically bigger and they sound bigger and rounder than the 12ax7, 12ay7, etc. But you'd better start stocking up on them Christian...I don't know if anyone's making a reissue of those. You can find them NOS on Ebay though...I like the Tung Sols. Do not buy any of the metal cased tubes...they're all microphonic. Go for the glass only. Lew

Re: New amp (More Mission Amps content!)

Here's my '51 Super...and my '54 Tele.

I started surfing Ebay the day I orderex the amp and I have only seen a few of the glass bottle tubes...I know where to get some but they are not cheap...Im gonna hev to stock up on them for sure, they sound great! Bruce got me started with Tung-Sols in this amp...NOS form 1958!

It's funny but your Tele is about the same colour as mine!

And Hoss...a Tele through this amp is a killer match!

Re: New amp (More Mission Amps content!)

Great amp Christian...And I love the look of your JV black with tortoise looks really nice. That amp must be awesome. The Aurora sure looks like a sweet and according to Lew it is.

Your amp must be a real gem. Nice job.

Is that the USA CUSTOM Tele from Tommy that we were talking about yesterday? Looks great!

My '58 Deluxe looks just like that, Curly! Same wear and everything.

yup, it's the bottom of the "tweed Deluxe stack" :)

and, for some reason, my tele sounds best out of that amp!

go figure ... hadn't been playing it much.
