New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

Until I saw/read your experiences with the Cornford I was all set to get a Roadhouse too but your experiences with it changed my mind slightly! I have a twin channel JCM800 2210 head that I've had since I was 15 and while it's a good sounding amp, I guess my tastes have evolved, even if ever so slightly, and something is missing from it's tone.

My main problem with amp shopping is that Splawns, Egnaters, MESAs, Blackstars etc I'd consider are in Cheshire, the 5150 III is in Doncaster and the Bogner may be in Manchester so that means I need a list of possible amps before I'm in a position to do all the travelling I'd have to do to do any testing.

I REALLY hate bugging you all and questioning everything, but I don't really have much other choice at the minute :banghead:
By all means try a cornford, the 50w roadhouse may be just the thing for you. Didn't work for me, but I'm odd like that.
You're having the same sort of problems I had, the amps are out there but never within easy reach of each other.
I recommend a trip to electromusic in doncaster mind, not everything in the store is on the website so you never know what they have in.
Must also say that the prices I've seen for Splawns over here would make me think twice about them. £1700 (roughly $2500) for the 100w quick rod sounds mighty expensive, then again a cornford MK50 will be that sort of price.
You should try the little mesa express mind, it's a top little amp.
Don't worry about bugging us, we like to answer questions :)

Yeah, I know what you mean about the Splawns being expensive over here. Same as with Boogies, Bogner etc, but as you said, no more than I'd pay for a Cornford.

Electro Music is where I saw the EVH 5150III for sale, so I was thinking about going up there anyway. I may give them a call and see what else they have in.

I have the cash ready to go, just need to find the right amp! :friday:

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

I'd get the Egnater. But I work in a shop that sells them and have spent time with them, I've never played through a Splawn but from clips and vids they don't seem like my cuppa tea

If you want to have a play on a messa express just drop me a line and I'm sure we can arrange an audition

Thanks for the offer mate, I'll definitely keep it in mind :)

At the minute, I have a bead on an Ecstasy 101b with an oversized 2x12 cab for what seems like a silly price. Depending how that goes, I'll deffo keep in mind the Express, and then I think it's down to a Splawn or the EVH 5150 III :friday:

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

You NEED to look into the Krank Nineteen80.

I managed to find 1 clip I didn't absolutely hate, which is a start I guess. Most Krank clips I've heard haven't been what I want tbh.

They sell Krank stuff at rattle and drum in Derby, not tried one myself mind.

They do, but the only Krank they list is the Krankenstein at £1600. And for that, I'd get a Splawn!

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

If you can get the 101B for what you know to be a silly price you really can't lose out mate. Sounds like you've really got to follow that one up before you do anything else. Good luck with that, I hope you get it... as I said it's the ONLY amp I would consider selling my old MK50 for. When will you know?

That's my thinking too. If I got it and didn't like it I could sell it and not lose anything I guess.

I got a reply from him last night saying it was still available, so I followed it up saying I was interested with the cash and would this weekend be anygood for me to go and have a look at it. I'm waiting for a reply, but hopefully it'll get sorted intime for me to get it this weekend :D

Fantastic stuff, hope it all goes well mate. IF it doesn't, don't discount the MK... you are more than welcome to try mine. I haven't tried the Roadhouse series and I won't deny having my concerns about Cornford as a company... they have had a real bad 18/ 24 months for various reasons and seem to be getting back on track. IMO the older MK50's are truely great sounding amps, and as an out an out classic / heavy rock amp I prefer the crunch and drive sound of the MK over the Bogner. I did have an MK50II for a while and that amp became too nice... it lost it's edge, very smooth and lacked the bottom end of the old ones. A mate has just picked a 2005 MK50H up in excellent condition for £850 so you don't have to break the bank. All said and done, if you want an amp that will cover more ground and sound great doing it then I really don't see how an XTC can be beat! I don't need that much amp to be honest and I am very comfortable with my back to basics approach.

Looking forward to a NAD thread soon and the review! :)

I'm still waiting to hear back from the guy at the minute, so I'll be checking my email on my phone every hour while at work! :D

A while ago before I was seriously looking at amps I came across the MK50 and MK50II and really liked the look of them. I've heard good things/bad things about them but have never had a chance to try 1 myself in person, so I shouldn't really draw too much of an opinion of them, it wouldn't be fair.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the guy gets back to me today, so hopefully I may be able to pick it up tomorrow. That is unless it's all an elaborate ruse and it's too good to be true and I get robbed or something :D

No worries, just be careful... hadn't thought about any potential dodgey/ scam deals. Make sure you take a bandmate or something, but you never know you just may get lucky.... then we'll all be cursing you! Lol. Seriously though, if it doesn't work out you're more than welcome to put my MK through it's paces.

Good luck mate! I'll be passing through there later this afternoon on my way to the cow farm ;)

Good luck with that Craig, I hope it works out nicely for you. :D I reckon the XTC might be just about perfect for you.

Re: New amp opinions/suggestions: Splawn Vs Egnater

Well, tomorrow is off (the guy has family stuff come up) so we're looking to rearrange for next weekend.
