The Splawn Competition is in the works and due around Christmastime. So now it's high time to do some cabinet shopping. Though a 4x12 would look killer and all, in reality a 2x12 is probably more my speed for my situation. And besides, if I ever needed to go bigger I suppose I could pick up another 2x12.

So, I've been looking at used Marshall 2x12s, used Genz Benz 2x12s and new Avatar 2x12s. I think the only way I'd get a 4x12 is if it was a great deal locally. So far nothing.

I have read mixed reviews so far on the Marshall 2x12s (low on the bang for buck scale), read that perhaps the GB might be a bit boomy for my application (but man they do look cool), and have read nothing but great raves for the Avatars - which I tend to be leaning toward except the head is 29" long and the cabinet is 28-1/2" long - but who'd probably notice but me.

So let's hear it, what cabs and speakers do y'alls use, and what do you like/dislike about them?

And you know I'm all about the 70s/80s metal. But the occasional new stuff gets me going as well. I plan to be running a Hot Plate at home.

I have played through a Electric 4x12 and it is great it is 18 ply birchwood and built like a tank. Essentially, it is a Orange 4x12 only stronger. The only gripes are, it's of course heavy around 130lbs, if I wanted to do an Orange head it would look terribly out of place with the color of the tolex of the cab (green) and if you like getting a fair price don't go near this (this cab cost me over a grand). Yet, it will make any head sound ten times better IMO.

I owned a Marshall JCM 2x12 for years - great cab, mine had EVM12L's in it. Look for a used one.

There was this thread about some cool-looking cabs recently, but they're 28 1/2" wide like the Avatar. I think that would look weird.

Check out the Ear Candy Buzz Bomb - maybe it's wide enough for your head. (Edit - nope it's only 28" wide.)

What about a pair of 1-12's? Side by side, they'd be wide enough to hold your head. For times when you don't feel like lugging the whole mess around, just take one cab (and your attenuator!) Avatar and Ear Candy both make 1-12's.

You're only doing this once right? I'd strongly suggest that you order a matching cab from Splawn. I think for the tones you'll get outta that head, 2 Vin 30's would suit you.

For a rig as fine as a Splawn, you owe it to yourself to not skimp on the cab, and get one that's a perfect match. You might be able to save a little if you order it empty w/wires ready to attach.

I wholeheartedly agree with this, and it was my first choice - and also goes with my philosophy of "buy it once." It puts me a few hundred over my "budget" which I promised not to exceed. But, I'm going to wait until the last minute for the cab, perhaps a used Splawn 2x12 will come available, or perhaps I'll end up with a few dollars from "Santa."

I agree though, Cal's setup was fantastic looking. I think he sold it, and I should've jumped on the cab... but I hadn't decided to pull the trigger at that time... wishy washy that's me.

Joneser, what are your experiences with mixing drivers? My first thought was the V30s since it seems to be the old standby. But I've been reading about mixing, matching, etc... man it's just another level of GAS and confusion.

What d'yall knows about Carvin Cabs. The Portland Craig's List has a nice looking 4x12 for 175. I just sent him an email inquiring what it's got inside.

I don't know what model it is, but it's a bottom cab, and it has that sort of that very open black grill with front-loading speakers - looks like those ones that Craig Chaquico used to advertise back in the big 80s, with the speakers very prominently visible - white piping all around It *looks* killer, but that's all I can tell you.

The owner got back to me, and added the following:

The top 2 are celestion (16 ohms) and the bottom are Carvin British series 100watts (8 ohms).

I didn't know you could mix and match loads.

I say get a matching splawn 2x12 cab...it is not that much more money in the long run and that way you wont want to tinker with your setup for years to come...10$ a month is what I tell myself in these situations
