New Amp Recommendation/Help!

Hi all!

First post here and going to do my best not to embarrass myself, as I have very little experience or knowledge when it comes to all this and everyone else seems to be pretty knowledgable.

Anyway, I could do with some help. I need an amp. More specifically a home/bedroom/practice amp. Something that can work well at lower volume.
I want to say that I’m not a beginner as I’ve been messing about for a few years now, but in terms of my ability I’m still pretty much in the basic/rubbish area.
I currently play an LP Studio through an Orange Micro Terror with its little 1x8 cab and I've got a bunch of pedals (TS9, DD3 etc.). I quickly realised I didn't like the Micro Terror, and really the only reason I picked it up was because I'd dumped my previous amp and it was cheap and small. But I want rid and a replacement as soon as possible (the replacement doesn't have to be particularly small it's just the Terror was convenient at the time)

I’m really only looking to play at home, maybe with some friends, but I live alone so that I suppose that gives me a little more flexibility in terms of volume I can go to. I guess I’d like something versatile, and the sort of stuff I play (or attempt to!) is much more on the modern side of things. Mainly things like emo-y stuff (Alexisonfire, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday), punk/pop-punk (Bad Religion, AFI, Rise Against, New Found Glory, Blink 182), and some metal/rock/indie (Metallica, Maiden, Dream Theater, Death Cab for Cutie, Biffy Clyro, Idlewild, Incubus, Smashing Pumpkins etc.) I know, a terrible taste in music!

When I've done my research and looked for getting similar tones to the bands/artists I like what keeps coming up the most is a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. Which I wouldn't have a problem with getting but I'm worried it's just far, far too much for someone like me. As I've got no chance of pushing it anywhere near to its potential, is it just going to be pointless and overkill for what I want/need? Can I rely on the master volume to work in my favour? Or just get anattenuator?

As the Dual Rec seemed too much I tried to find something smaller and more suitable. So when I came across the Mini Rectifier I thought I'd found what I was looking for. But then everything I've read about the Mini Rec says it's pretty much too loud for home use as well! So I've kept looking but just can't seem to find the perfect fit for me. This probably makes it seem like I'm somewhat hung up on Rectifiers but I'm definitely not wed to the idea of it having to be a Mesa. I just want to find what's best for me.

So I could do with some advice or recommendations. Something that can get close to the tones of the artists I mentioned but is going to be useable at home. Is that the Dual Rec, Mini Rec, or something else entirely? Blackstar? Jet City? Oh, and budget is £700-800 max (UK).

Be gentle though as you can probably tell I barely know what I'm talking about!

All opinions and ideas are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

(Apologies for the length, wanted to make sure I gave as much info as possible but may have gone overboard.)

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

For low volume, and the tones you like I'd recommend a Fender Super Champ XD or X2. They have great higher gain sounds, and sound very good a low volume. Since it's a tube amplifier, when you get to turn it up, the tubes will add quite a bit of their own goodness.

Well, partially...it's a hybrid, and they sound respectable. For the OP's needs, he should be focusing on solid state (or hybrid) to get better tone at lower volume. Modelers are fun to play around with @ home (i.e. Fender Mustangs, Peavey Vypyrs, Roland Cubes, etc.)

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

Hey man.
I would definitely NOT go with tubes if your main usage will be at home.

Now... what is it that you don't like about your Orange? I would think that's a great setup for your expected usage.
Is there anything wrong with the sound? I'm asking because an amp like the Micro Terror can sound terrible or wonderful depending on how you use your pedals, etc.

Maybe you could upload a clip of your playing, explain a bit what's wrong, and we'll chime in.
I'm guessing the 1x8 cab might not cutting it, and maybe through a 1x12 or a 2x12 things could improve a lot.

Hope you can help us with these questions, so we can help you in exchange. :D

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

Some of the folks here really seem to like the tiny Hotone Heart Attack for Rectifier-type sounds at lower volumes.

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

The Hotones are very nice sounding, but fall way short on volume "....really only looking to play at home, maybe with some friends". It won't cut it for jamming. I bought one, played it, then put it back in the box for use IF I ever have a need for QUIET (which I currently don't).

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

Just going from my own experience, the Super Champ XDs really give up the goods at very low levels, but are stage worthy still.

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

For home use I am using the Yamaha thr10c and find it gives great, responsive tones at whisper level. Turned up it can be pretty loud too.
It also contains more than enough effects to get by with but, I also use a boss me80 (plugged into the amps aux input) at times too.
For me, the only improvement Yamaha could give this amp is a footswitch as it is programmable but the sounds are accessed via 5 buttons on the top panel.

^ This = win. I have two different THR10's. The standard (beige)THR10 and theTHR10X. AMAZING little amps. They won't keep up with a drummer but they will definitely rock your bedroom.

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

THRs are amazing and I love mine, but I don't think I'd like it to be my only amp, and I think the OP will probably ultimately want the real full-size thing. And definitely if he happens to go to jams. And he is living alone, so he doesn't seem to need whisper levels low volume.

I just can't get it to sound.. good! I realise that's subjective but it just feels fizzy and grating. Maybe the Micro Dark would have been a better fit? Also I would quite like 2 channels, if possible.
But I fully accept and think it's pretty likely it's probably more to do with my setup and playing than the amp itself! I only really picked it up as an interim after dumping an amp before. I found it for cheap on eBay and thought i could use it briefly before reselling it when I decided on what I really wanted (or keep it if I liked it). I agree that a 1x12, which is what I was planning to get, would probably help though.

I'll try to get a clip of me playing as well. Might take me a while to get one that isn't embarrassingly bad!

Yeah it doesn't have to be whisper quiet. I can crank it a little bit!

I have seen a lot of good stuff about the THR10 when doing my research though. No footswitch is a bit of a bummer. Seen lots of love for the Boss Katana as well but I know very little about them.

Appreciate all the replies so far! Am I right in thinking the majority view is to steer clear of tubes then for the low volumes I want? No point getting an attenuator?

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

I would also suggest a modeling amp
Try out several flavors of amp
At bedroom volume

I have not seen one that takes pedals well though
Most have built in effects

For noodling at the house
I use a Roland Cube 30
Or a Peavey VIP2

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

If you really want two channels, you could go for the very inexpensive and amazing Blackstar ID TVP 60.

That thing sounds phenomenal. But if you're not getting the right tone with your Orange, I think we could help you for a cheaper bill than getting a whole new setup.

I'll have a look at the Blackstar, thanks.

When you say you could help me get the tone I'm looking for out of my Orange, how would you go about that? I'm guessing I'm going to need to get that clip of it uploaded.

Awesome, I'll take a look, thanks!

Re: New Amp Recommendation/Help!

Another recommendation for the Fender Super Champ X2. It sounds good at lower volumes, even better at higher volumes, clean channel is blackface inspired, amp models on channel two are pretty good and cove a lot of sonic territory, at 15W it's loud enough to jam with a couple of friends, and the head and matching 1×12 cab are just under £500
