It is my understanding that the *put_pickupname_here*_J pickups were the pickups wound by MJ BEFORE she moved to the Custom Shop.
I think at the time each pickup was labeled with its' model name and the initial of the employee that wound it so a JB-L is a JB wound by a guy(?) named Lance (or sth, first name to pop to mind)

No, they are not from the Custom shop and in all reality, they are the same as any other JB in specs and sound. Some folks just tend to think just becasue they are wound by MJ, it gives them more mojo or a better tone. Pure plecebo effect is all that is.

Its no different as I said before. MJ does run the Custom shop now but, it is just a standard production JB. Its the same as if anyone else made it.

That may be true, but I've got a dozen JB's and had dozens more and the JB_J's have always sounded a little better. I understand there is a specification that the pickups are made to, but there is something about those particular pickups and obviously the person that made them did a pretty good job to be where she's at.
