$350 for a Peavey Grind 5 BXP NTB off Ebay after playing one locally, without a case.
In retrospect I should have gone with the local one... better set-up and fret dressing... the finish on these basses ain't the greatest, but it's all fixable.
I had to sand down some spots on the body and filed out the fret-ends and gave it a regular set-up.
It desperately needed the Fret Doctor juice I put on the fingerboard.
I'm not a bass player exactly, I just use it for recording.

But I must say that it felt better to me than any other sub-$400 5 string I played and it has the thru-neck/natural finish that I love. (The newer ones come with a lower bout "scoop" I'm not too sure about, tho.)
It also comes with HipShots new Triple-Lock Down individual thru-body bridge pieces, which are a nice feature.
At some poinit I'm sure I'll play around with the electronics to give it a more flexible sound.

The Harmony-Central reviews on it.

Good luck.

I was looking at these guitars too, but I have no experience with active pickups (except that I don't like them at all on guitars). I was also figuring that a 4 string would be more up my alley as the closer that the bass is to playing a guitar, the easier it'll be for me to lay down tracks. Does the extra string really make for much difference? Is the extra string tuned lower than E on a bass, or higher than G?

Well, thanks for the advice everyone! I managed to find a mexican Fender J-Bass on the ole evil bay for a little over 200$ so I bought it.

That's a good price. The J neck may also be more to your liking as they tend to be thinner than P necks.

My old standby for over ten years has a J neck on it. Every time my brother picks it up he proclaims it a neck that only a guitar player could love.

After playing my G&L for a few weeks I get what he's talking about.

Let us know how it works out.

There's somthing wrong with your bass . . . I think it's backwards dude! Seriously though, don't those big hunks of shiny chrome get in the way while you're playing?

On the contrary! The one over the pickup makes for a great thumbrest. And I guess you get used to them. It felt a little weird in the beginning, but out of my three basses it's by far my favourite. I love the big, chunky neck, the heavy weight and the big open sound. The metal covers actually change the tone dramatically! The one over the pickup affects the flux of the pickup coils, thus making the tone 'bigger' somehow, and more powerful. I can't explain how, but I can clearly hear the difference when I remove it. The cover over the bridge mainly influences the acoustic tone, it gives a nice hollow 'ring' to the sound.

Re: New Bass . . .

On a 5 string the 5th string is tuned to B. I am glad you found a bass, but I just wanted to say that I bought an Ibenez Rodstar 2 series at a pawn shop for exactly $100.00. I've had it for 5 years and I love it. Oh by the way I have benn plaing professionally for 23 years... the first 7 years on bass.

Re: New Bass . . .

I've been reading about how the pickups on most MIM Fender Jazz basses are pretty crappy, does anyone have replacements that they like? I'm looking for a noiseless set of pickups . . . read some good things about Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups, but havn't heard anything about other pickups . . .

Re: New Bass . . .

Steve; You should check out the Peavey Millennium's. They go for around $220, and they play great. Good dependable company. I'm thinking of snagging one myself.

DITTO!!!!!! Great inexpensive, easy to play, fairly good sounding bass.
As you can see I am also clearly a Peavey fan. If you want to spend 300.00 you can pick up the active version wich uses the Cirrus pups and eq and a little better bridge. The active is really quiet and mid range punchy, and just plain pretty.:smokin:

Uhh, I appreciate it man, but I already got a fender bass for cheap on ebay. Just wondering what kind of pickups I can get that sound half decent and are noiseless . . .

Re: New Bass . . .

I've always been partiall to the cooler, vintagey-ranged Basslines pickups. The Hot was pretty muddy and boomy in my experience. The QP was very powerful, but kind of clanky and almost harsh.

Jazz basses are noiseless when both pickups are on full. If properly shielded and grounded, they shouldn't make that much noise even when soloing a pickup. But if you want true noiseless, the STK-J1 Classic for Jazz should be good.

Re: New Bass . . .

The DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pups are nice, haven't tried SD Basslines yet. I heard them and played them in other instruments and they sounded good and responded well, but I haven't swapped in one of my instruments to really be able to describe the tonal differnence acurately. I have Ultra Jazzes and Bartolinis, and I like both quite a bit.

Re: New Bass . . .

Nobody swaps pickups for their bass?

Another hundred or so for pickups and you're within spitting distance of a used MIA G&L. It's like I'm talking to myself some days....

I had Basslines on my Hamer Cruise 5 and I believe an ESP J copy. Not wholly impressed with either truth be told. I actually preferred the stock ones on my MIJ Jazz Bass Special which are notoriously muddy, but they did give that nice warm boom to the low-end.

Check out the Talk Bass forums or the Dudepit. Both are places specifically for bass players. Arguably on here there are more chicks than dedicated bass players.

Thanks for the tip on the Talk Bass forums . . . however, I think that you're a little off on the price of a used MIA G&L bass. I havn't seen anything for much under $600 . . . which is still double my price limit. I'm sure they're great basses and all, but I have to pay for rent too . . .
