Re: New Bass . . .

Maybe a Squier Standard jazz and slap some active EMG's in it? My Squier Precision/Jazz hybrid sounded decent stock but when i got some EMG's in it it sounds killer!
I don't agree on that. I have yet to find a Squier bass that I like. When I went to get my Ashdown ABM300 C210T EVO II, I did not have room in the car to carry my own bass with me. The store I got my Ashdown from back then had three lefty basses, coincidentally all three P-basses: one was a Squier Standard Series P-bass Special (with the P neck pickup and J bridge pickup), one was a Fender MIM P-bass and last but not least there was a custom made P-bass of unknown origin at only 50 euros more than the Squier. I got to try all three of them through my own Ashdown.
The Squier SUCKED! The pickups had little output volume, sounded dull and the overall tone of the bass was not good. The neck was very, very wobbly, you could actually use it as a tremolo, with quite a bending range too...
The Fender was OK, I really liked that bass. The feel was nice, the tone was there too, the neck was considerably stiffer, it just had everything a good P-bass should have IMO.
But then I got to play that custom made bass. It was originally fiesta red, but the previous owner had it sprayed in sunburst. The builder was unknown, it might as well have been an SX with a Fender decal on the headstock, so to speak. The one piece alder body and beautiful flamed maple neck with Brazilian rosewood fingerboard gave it away as more than that, though. And then I plugged it in... I was blown away! Just a passive P-bass pickup from Seymour, but so big, punchy and natural sounding! And the neck on this bass is gorgeous... Needless to say I HAD to buy it.
I guess what I'm trying to say is something like Skarekrough's post: If you pay a little more, you may find a true gem at a great price!
