Re: New bridge pickup for SG

I was going to put my CC in the bridge of my green SG-X sometime this weekend just cuz I've been wanting to hear how it sounds. It sounds good in my Strat but I'm changing my Strat back to all single coils.

I play groovey stoner metal too so i'll let you know what i think of it man. :smokin: I heard Josh Homme used the CC in his all-mahogany Deans for some early QOTSA and KYUSS stuff so..

P.S. welcome to the forum and that's a funny screen name...Fugazi would probably be a lot more popular if Eddie Vedder knew how to spell huh? :smokin:

HAHA, thanks man! People usually don't know what my name means. ;) It'd really appreciate it if you would let me know how it sounds.
BTW, I didn't know Josh Homme used Deans nowadays..

Re: New bridge pickup for SG

I also play similar music a lot and I had an SG Standard with similar problems as yours. I loved the 490r neck and found the 498t too shrill and thin.

I changed the pickups to DiMarzio Tone Zone and PAF Pro. The PP sounded great in the neck, split as well. The TZ sounded good as well, I think that it suited my SG, ymmv. I really liked the split sound of it as well.

However, not even the bass-heavy TZ could fix the innate problems of the guitar in question. The higher strings always sounded thin. Sometimes it sounded heavenly but just not to the degree and constancy that my better guitars did. I sold it and got an LP, problem fixed. I'm still curious if it was the guitar in question, me, or the guitar in general that just didn't suit me. I'd still be very interested in SGs if it wasn't option #3.

How difficult is it to swap the magnets?

Re: New bridge pickup for SG

I'm not an expert either, but if you type in "swap pickup magnet" in google, you get several hits explaining the various steps.

I've been looking at DiMarzio pickups also, but most players and soundsamples are guys shredding with Ibanez guitars. I may be a little biased and I'm probably wrong concerning at least some of their pickups, but making sweet raw groovy stoner/doom with an SG seems like something DiMarzio pickups in general just weren't made for.
By the way, I think the SG just isn't the guitar for you. You probably just need the push in the bass region that only a huge block of mahogany like an LP can give you. I've played with a Hagstrom Swede (LP model) for many years myself and it sounds absolutely great, but because I have problems with my neck/shoulders as a result of my job combined with the heavy LP I chose to use a lighter guitar, hence the SG. Now I just have to get it sounding a little more like the Hagstrom.

I wouldn't worry about the DiMarzio line, especially the more general pickups, the Super Distortion for example, being only for shredding stuff, even if they often seem to be labeled and marketed as such. I'd definitely look at them if you want a darker and bassier tone out of your SG, as I've had the impression that DiMarzio seems to excel in such tones vs. the more traditional and bright Duncan tones.

You may very well be right about the SG not being the right guitar for me. It's a pity, as I love the looks and playability of one.

How difficult is it to swap the magnets?

Easy. There's old threads about it & other info online. From loosening strings to re-tuning, it's 10 to 15 minutes. You get instant results, and don't have to wait while something else is being delivered to you (like a new PU). If that magnet swap doesn't do what you want, decide where you want to go tonally, and try another magnet. This puts the control back in your hands, and you're not blindly relying on dozens of contradictory recommendations.

Re: New bridge pickup for SG

Thanks Fuhgawz and blueman! I'll see if I need to experiment with my Custom then.

Re: New bridge pickup for SG

Alternative 8 might be the go. Plenty of bottom end, highs not shrill, plenty of mids.

Re: New bridge pickup for SG

I'm afraid Alternative 8 has to much output. I really want slightly hotter than vintage output.

Re: New bridge pickup for SG

Normally I hate the C5, but this might be the one application where it works. An SG (Gibson, not those thick Epiphones) tends to be thin -- thinner than an LP, Strat, or Tele. A C5 could be a good fit.

The CC lacks a bit in the bottom. In most guitars, that might be not big deal, but it might be a bad combo in an SG.

OT: I bet the Blues Saraceno model would sound really good in an SG.
