New build: finish help

So alot of you guys do builds so hopefully you can help. I am doing a prs copy and I want to so a satin neck but the body and headstock will be nitro lacquer. I did a few searches and I see alot on how to modify an existing instrument but not much on the best way to do it initially. I'm open to oil finishes too, although I have zero experience with them. I assume that of I do a regular nitro and then take it down to a satin finish I will have to wait a significant amount of time to let the clear harden.

Any help or tips is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Re: New build: finish help

Just spray nitro normally, let it cure, and for satin start with 000 steel wool and then 0000 steel wool. That is what I do to get satin finishes.

Re: New build: finish help

yeah you can get a satin finish with lacquer no problem, but you need to let it cure first, before you take off the gloss.

Re: New build: finish help

nitro normally takes two to three weeks, but check with the manufacturer of whatever you're using.

Re: New build: finish help

There's also an additive, called lacquer flattener. This you would add to lacquer at spraying if you are using a gun.

If you're doing rattle - can application then as easdy to just sand as normal and finish with 1200 grit for satin.

Re: New build: finish help

depends how you apply it.

If you apply it thinly, it'll be a thin finish. If you don't, it'll end up thick... much like any other finish available.

Re: New build: finish help

Get the sponge pads up to 5000. Nitro is VERY forgiving... but you gotta play by the rules. hehe lol luvu bro.
