New Bulb Mix Test Clip! Feedback and Criticism greatly appreciated! (Podxt, Dfhs, Car

Hey guys,

Im trying out a pretty much brand new mix for myself while sticking to pretty much the same ingredients: Dfhs and my Podxt.
I decided to rerecord a short clip of an already existing song so that i could get some good a/b comparisons and i like the way it is sounding so far.
I was going for a more open and natural drum sound and i changed a few things on the guitar and bass patches as well. Also i went for a slightly more compressed overall mix to give it a bit more of that "in your face" quality to it.

I was hoping for some good old constructive criticism and any tips you may have to offer to improve the production, especially if you have some good revealing monitors (which i still need to get...being poor is totally overrated!)

Here is the link to the clip:

(its the first song on the list, not the one that plays by default)
or this to direct link: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=5006554&q=hi

thanks guys, hope ya like it!!

Hey Misha! It sounds cool man.But your older mix where better IMHO.Since it sounds super tight and really in your face ,the Dynamics lack and the Cymbals begin to get unnatural..Maybe with a real drum ,you can have the best result.BTW ,the single string riffing begins to loose it's punch too. There is a great overall punch ,but the dynamics are gone.

Great clip.
Guitars sound a bit thicker than your other stuff.
Drums sound much larger in the mix, but the cymbals sound strange.
Overall a definate improvement in my opinion

thanks guys, thats interesting, what would you say needs to be fixed cymbalwise? are they too bright or dark? too low or high in the mix? or is it just that stupid soundclick mp3 compression that is screwing with them?

I would say it's thomas Haake heheh:laugh2: :laugh2: .Man it's like that:
Everything is so on the spot ,that you just hear that the cymbals are not real! You just hear how same they sound ,sterile ,lifeless ,produced...not played. But the Soundclick Compression may have it's role too.It screwed so much songs of mine!:yell:

ah i see what you are saying now, yeah dude i should mess with the velocities on them hopefully that will do the trick!
thanks for the heads up bro!

Huitars are sounding a bit distant, or low in the mix... Snare is way too loud, and still has that tennis ball type thing going on.

Kick isn't loud enough for my tastes, and sounds too beach-bally.

OH's sound very verbed out, washywashy type of thing.

Other than that, it's sounding good.

I thought it sounded good, but like a lot of your stuff I wish I hard more NOTE and less PERCUSSION, not meaning the drums, but like when you chug-chug-chug on a chord (let's make it an E chord for example), I want to hear more E, B, E and not simply that you're chug-chug-chugging on something whose note values are unclear

Does that make any sense?

At any rate - killer playing, recording, and programming

That problem seems pretty common with this type of music. Overall, I'd say that this is an improvement over most of the Meshuggah stuff I've heard.

Cool stuff, but i think you should permanently replace your line6 with your powerball :)

haha i wouldnt neccesarily call it a problem, but i understand what you are saying, i just love that sound personally, at least for this style of music and riffing!

Agreed....it's certainly growing on me.

cool - well if you love it then keep kicking 'em out!

I honestly like it too, but I figure if there was one way for you to improve the recording that would be it

keep writing / recording! send me everything!
