Here's the current progress. I forgot glue for tolex and have been waiting that. Should come in mail next week.

Re: New cab build thread

How did you determine what the dimensions should be?

Re: New cab build thread

I just made baffle from four 10cm boards and sides from three and added couple of inches between speakers + to top and to bottom.

I checked the usual dimensions and noticed that that put it exactly same as Orange PPC212. I found couple of other diy projects with same dimensions as well with pine, so I thought I'm good to go with that.

Re: New cab build thread

I was just wondering because I know that the international dimensions are one of the things that can get matched to the speakers. I've seen a few websites that had calculators and was wondering if you had used one.

When in doubt about dimensions, just take a respected manufacturer with a good informative website and knock their sh!t off

For guitar speakers? That's interesting, didn't thought to look up.

I've used some of those for car audio before.

Re: New cab build thread

I've been really busy lately and only visited here to check quick threads, not wanting to invest time for this. But here it is. Got the cab finished last week:

Playing it out, my first impressions we're quite mixed. A lot of bass and highs present with distinctive lack of mids. I also found out really how much speaker placement affects tone; switching only lower speaker produced tone very same as 1x12 I had it in earlier.

I dropped the buffer from my signal chain and managed to get quite good tones out of it.

Nevertheless, I had to try to improve it, so I picked up Eminence Governor on my way from classifieds.

Mixing Governor with G12H is not very good combo. Well, it would have been awesome for trash metal tones sure. Not my thing though. Very solid, thight and clear with not much dynamics or sparkle.

After two days I switched other G12H back. And realized I probably hadn't secured it thight enough on the baffle first time, which messed up the tone. (The neck of the bolts are wider and should have been sunk into the wood) After tighteng it up surely solid this time, It sounds just plain awesome.

I can say straight it's the best tone I've ever had from a cab. Not speaking up my own work, but the combination of G12H and oversized cab... The low mid roar and smooth highs are just exactly what I imagine when thinking of perfect guitar tone.

I did missed quite badly the portability thing though. It weights a ton and is too big to carry out the house very easily... I'm still how to add a handles for it to make it easier to carry. Fender type leather handle I have on a shelf looks comically small and useless for the job...

I don't currently have any recording gear set up. I try to post some clips in the future...

Re: New cab build thread

That is a very deep cab. Did you consider porting it?

No. I don't think guitar cab needs that in the first place. And it would have needed much more care with calculations and such.

It just came that deep accidentally...

That is the problem with many 2x12 and over sized 1x12 designs. They can sound great but they are almost as unwieldy as a 4x12. Anyway, good job and it sounds great.

Just wondering.

So was I looking at it after installing speakers. :D

EDIT: I don't know how that pic reposted there and can't remove it...
