New cabinet day.

I bought a cheap Seismic empty 2x12 last weekend. It showed up today. I think it was $155 new or a little less with some coupon code.

I pulled the grille, connected the wires, drilled 8 holes with some Celestion T-75s I had on the shelf. Sunk 8 new screws. Screwed the grille back on.
I am happy with the build quality. The handles could maybe be a bit more stout, but they seem adequate.

I played it a bit, bounced back and forth between the 1960a I have over here. My first impressions were it sounds a little bit honky. Obviously not as much boom and low thump as the 4x12, but I bumped the resonance to compensate a little.

I'll play with it a few days before I decide if I may go with different speakers maybe. I don't hate it, but I'm not in love with it yet. 75s have always been one of my favorite flavors, but I have only really used them in 4x12s.

I'll get a sound byte up soon.

Is it open or closed back? My closed back ported 2x12 with a Texas Heat/Swamp Thang has plenty of low end. Though it is also bright, which I like.

A lot of what you are hearing initially is the response of a front loaded cab. If you are not used to a front loaded cab it will take some getting used to for you to adjust. The same exact speakers will seem different and respond different in a front vs rear loaded cabinet. Give your ears a few days to adjust and get used to it and then bounce back to the 4x12 rear load and you will notice a huge difference.

Securb, I'm not hearing any crazy highs or brashness, but I'll look into it just to learn about it.

Bogner, I think you're right, also it sits pointing straight and way down on the floor, I kept wanting to tilt it upwards. Maybe I'll stand it on its side and see if that helps a little bit too. The sound is shooting past my ankles ha!

The only other 2x12 I've ever used was a blackstar venue or ht or something and it was flat spectacular once I closed the back up. I shouldn't have sold that one off. We live and we learn.

I was relieved when I started playing down drop B, it just made everything sound so much better, I really like it now.
I haven't played much up in std tuning for years now, I bet that had a lot to do with my initial reactions as well.

Less sag / sponginess and the quicker/tighter response of front loaded cabs typically work well for quick response type playing and also lower tunings. Your 4x12 is also a slant cab so that has all kinds of things going on that a straight cab will not. Once your ears adapt you will be fine.
