My 2 cents. On the new Macs with intel chips you can get either parallels or Boot Camp and run both Win XP and Mac OS. You could bet a Macbook and a Toneport UX2 which would give you an audio interface and it comes with Ableton Live software light to record into. If you want to go hard core recording you will need lots of ram and an external hard drive but you can get your feet wet with what I mentioned. On the PC side you can do the same thing except you can't run Mac OS of course.
