New DSL 20 CR “Fizzy, Raspy” Ultra Gain

I’m really enjoying my brand new DSL 20 CR. The only issue is the tone of the Ultra Chain is “fizzy” or “buzzing”. Anyone found a way to turn down the fizz? I’m considering getting an over drive pedal to boost the classic gain channel. Any suggestions.

When I think "ultra" gain, I expect fizzy as part of the sound.
Maybe a clean boost on your crunch channel might suit you better. Or as you said, an overdrive.

Plus, if the amp is brand new, the speaker probably needs to be broken in.
Isn't that the combo with the Creamback in it?

What guitar/pickup you hitting it with?

Is it a 75 or 65 watt creamback?

It's a 70/80. It will get better as it breaks in, but they aren't the warmest speaker. I would also guess you are running it at really low volumes, tubes don't really "bloom" until they get pushed a little, unfortunately, that's pretty loud even on a 20W amp. I'm speaking generally, I haven't tried the DSL20 personally, but I've used a ton of amps over the years.

That said, it's a really cool amp, and there is some fuzz inherit in high gain, so depending on what you are going for, you might be on the right track to try an OD with the classic gain channel which I'm guessing is more JCM800-ish(?)

How loud are you playing it? I borrowed this amp from my Soundman for a gig last December. When I first turned it on, I almost cried - fizzy and thin. That changed in a big way once I turned it up a bit. This is typical of most Marshalls to be honest. I like the DSL-20 a LOT and would like to get one for myself someday. Fizzy is not how I would describe it. However, the DSL line in general does strike me as a bit mid-scooped.

I got an Ibanez Tube Screamer on the way. I will see how that sounds boosting the clean channel

A TS into a clean channel won't be very "dirty", what kind of tone are you looking for?

Get one with a "hot" mode and it will probably do it.
Or like I said, a clean boost preferably with a top boost option like a Keeley Katana (not to be confused with the Boss amp of the same name).

You might also try backing the presence way down at low volumes.

Change the speaker. I bet the 70/80 is your problem.

I am learning the EQ on the amp and turning down the presence below 12:00, keeping treble at 12:00, bass about 10:00, mids at 2:00 has a nice classic rock tone.

Ah yes! Learn to play the amp!!!

Question: What pickup are you using? A mega hot pickup into a gain-up amp can get fizzy fast...that amp probably does not need a blasted preamp from the pickup. Let the amp duo the work. Lower the pickup volume, lower the gain on that channel.

WLH is not mega hot. I say turn the gain down. Or try something someone else suggested.
