New Duncan stacks

Re: New Duncan stacks

'54 strat, the Hot Noiseless pickups are supposed to be WORLDS better than the vintage noiseless. Just a thought.

Re: New Duncan stacks

It was mentioned here that the new Stack was going to be released by the end of the year. How long does it usually take for the European distributors, or on-line shops like Black Rose or Lew's Guitars, to have the new product in stock after the official release date?

Re: New Duncan stacks

Peter, I'll ask Evan how production is going on these or maybe Evan will see your question and provide the answer. I'll be stocking them just as soon as they are available though.
Thanks! Lew

Thanks, Lew! :) I have a Strat-copy here with everything BUT the three single coils, LOL. I'd like to go noiseless but as close to the real thing as possible, and preferably Alnico V. First I thought of getting something from Dimarzio, but if the new Stack is so good, I'll wait till it becomes available. I'll buy myself a set for Christmas. ;)

I sure hope so, Lew. The first production batch just went to the floor today, but they're the first beta version, which Nuno Bettencort and Washburn have ordered.

The "Lew Version" should be ready to go to the floor at the end of this month, or the beginning of next month (I hope).

Take care,

Re: New Duncan stacks

are the new stacks only gonna be for people going after the "strat" tone?

or is there gonna be other stacks, with less of the strat sound?

The Bettencourt ones are supposed to have notably more mids, like a hot version.

The "Bettencourt/Washburn" version is not really alot hotter although, IMO, it is a little less bright and thicker sounding than the second version. The main diff I noticed in the two sets of prototypes I tested is that in the second version (the one Evan refered to as the "Lew Version" :eek2: :wow: ) the middle polepieces are raised closer to the strings which results in a brighter and more classic '62 Strat tone...and the mids are a little less thick, less cloudy and clearer and spankier. THAT'S the Strat tone I prefer and the second version sounds more like the pickups in my original '63 Strat and the Antiquity Surfer pickups in most of my newer Strats. I'm honored to have been a participant in the development of these new pickups and I'll be using them in my gigging Strat now that I've started playing out again...mostly at lower volume church gigs where the noiseless design will really be a big help. Re: New Duncan stacks

Thanks for the info, Lew. Can't wait to try them out. My biggest gripe with single coils is the noise. That explains why I'm a humbucker guy even though I do love the Fender Texas Specials.

Re: New Duncan stacks

The release of the Stack Plus must be really close. It's already included in the Tone Chart on the new site, and the Classic Stack's no longer among the models listed there. :)

Re: New Duncan stacks

I've got 'em in my gigging Strat now. There's nothing I can add to what's already been posted about them. But they are TRULY my favorite humcancelling Strat pickups I've ever tried or owned.

And the first set of pickups I've ever had the opportunity to make suggestions about and actually had those suggestions applied.

Thanks again Evan!

Re: New Duncan stacks

after hearing all of this I have some serious G.A.S. for those pickups as well as I have wanted a strat for a while. What do you think guys? I will have some excess cash in january should I get a Mexican standard strat and load it with a set. How much would that cost total (rough estimate) and would it be a waste in that instrument. Its just that I want a nice player guitar and my cash isn't gonna stretch to an American Standard.

I owned a tex-mex strat many years ago that had the same basic construction as the MIM Standards. The guitar became one of my favourites following the installation of an SSL trio. Get a second hand one that plays well, and you can be pretty certain that a pickup upgrade will not be in vain. If you’re not satisfied, sell the guitar for roughly the same price, and stick the new stacks in the MIA standard. (save)

I’m looking forward to seeing how the Lew Stacks stack up (heh) ;)
