New EMGs causing feedback

I replaced the EMG 57/66 set in my Ibanez with a Het set. I really liked how the guitar sounded at home at low volume (because of my living situation, I cannot turn my amp up to gig volume) after the pickup swap.

I brought it to my gig last weekend with the intention of using it all night, but there was a lot of feedback coming from my monitor, so I put it back in its case and grabbed my backup guitar (with EMG 81/60). There was no feedback with this guitar.

Could there be any wiring issue that would cause this? When I swapped the old PUs for the Het Set, I just plugged the new pickups in using the quick connect system, so none of the wiring was really touched.

Could it be pickup height? They are very close to the strings, but no closer than the 81 in the bridge of my other guitar.

Any other thoughts?

Thank you so much guys. This forum has been a big help to me.

Re: New EMGs causing feedback

If it's high frequency feedback it could be a failure to pot the metal cover(s) on the Het Set properly. That's the biggest difference between them that I can surmise, assuming that your 81 is plastic and the 57/66 were potted more effectively.

I imagine EMG would warrant something like that.

I would back them away from the strings too and see what the results are. Maybe the exposed, bare pole pieces are more susceptible to noise than the typical EMG blades thar sit under the plastic cover.

I've been researching the HetSet and one user complained they were "Too hot". (an EMG 81/85 user)

So I'm still on the fence.

That would be bad because i got them in a trade. No warranty. I tried them again yesterday at home. Very briefly turned the amp loud as hell and no feedback. Weird. We'll see how they do at rehearsal tuesday night.

Otherwise i am very happy with how they sound.

Trade or not, shoot EMG an email. They'll help you out. Had the same exact issue happen. Sent them my defective (and modified, mind you) pickup, they sent me a brand new one, no questions asked.
