NEW EVH pickup thread for LtKojak!!!

So how many pickups could an alnico 2 lover love if an alnico 2 lover could love alnico 2's? Also where does Eddie get tight bass from with all that alnico 2 love? Can one just put a Custom Custom in the bridge and a JBA2 in the neck and have a Wolfgang set that sounds better because it's got Duncans? Is Eddies new alnico 3 neck pickup the same 16k pickup with and alnico 3 instead of alnico 2? Will a chainsaw to your guitar improve your tone?

A lot of this isn't just down to the pickup, but I suspect that Eddie-philes will be in here soon who know a lot more about his pickup choices over the years than I do. Sit tight.

Yeah. :) I am kind messing with LtKojak because he recently said he was glad the EVH threads had died down. I like his posts, so I am kind of halfway trolling him and also interested in some EVH info.

It's well known that one of his pickups for his first few records was a Super 70 in a Destroyer [until he ruined his, had to borrow another, then couldn't get another with original pickup again...]

On the first album, it was used for all the non-vibrato tracks, according to EVH's later claims.

Classic 42AWG with A8 is rough ballpark, though I can't recall what the original specs were claimed to be. There's a few people doing Super 70-inspired pickups, but most of them are doing things like scatter-winding that aren't considered consistent with original pickups.

Though really, the most critical thing for EVH's sound [aside from his playing style] is the Marshall undervolted to 90-100V... Lot more leeway on the pickups when the amp is doing the squishing.

He said that ruined the tone of that guitar.

I find that different guitars work better with different pickup/magnet combinations. What sounds great in one sounds like poo in another.

Some good smooth stuff right there.

Here's more and arguably even better! ;)

Hey Lt Kojak, weren't you using alnico 4 59n and alnico 8 59b or was it a C8?

I've used for over four years the A4'59n/Custom8 combo. At that time I was playing Classic Rock and British Blues, and I was pretty vocal about the qualities of the A4/A8 mag combo, which I've called it the "Universal Whisperer" mag set.

Nowadays I play Smooth Jazz and I use an A3/A2-modded '59 set, and I call this mag set the "Smooth Vintage Whisperer".

HTH,

Ah, ok I went to your Soundcloud (I don't know why I haven't before) and really digged the tones you had going on. It got me curious about what you were using. What kind of guitar (woods and what not) did you have those in?

Thank you for your kind words, Zheddar! ;)

That's a 1986, Korean-made Vantage DL-405 an all-mahogany LP Custom copy.

That's the harness I made specially for this event. 2 x CTS 500K linear for volume and 2 x CTS 500K Audio taper for tone. Mojotone Oil-on-Polyester Vitamin T .0022 caps, Switchcraft toggle switch and jack, made with vintage shielded push-back wire.

Those are both p'ups after being connected to the Triple Shot p'up rings.

That's the MJ Custom Shop Hy-Bro neck p'up prototype.

That's the studio where I recorded the tracks.

That's the post when I make my final assessment.

That's about it. I'm sorry that thread lost the eye candy due to the Photobucket debacle, but at least the words are still there, which are the most important part anyway.

Eddie's tone is in his fingers. I went out and bought the EVH 5150 III amp (50 watt), with matching cabs, and an EVH striped guitar, played it through an EVH Phase 90 and Flanger, with TC Electronics Delay and reverb. It came 99 percent close to Eddie's tone, but his fingers were missing. I still sounded like myself.

I was never much of a jazz player, and went out of my way fight it in my school days. I certainly appreciate it more and more the older I get though, and I'm always regretful that I never appreciated it much when I was at Beeklee.
