New evh wolfgang!

Re: New evh wolfgang!

I take it there were different tiered versions that came out for Peavey? I saw some that were under $1000 on ebay but I was figuring those were likely the "budget versions".

They did a bunch of different models. I'm not sure but there may have even been an import.

I know the Specials have a flat top.

Yeah, there were basically 4 tiers

EXP - export model made in Korea. Basswood body, figured veneer top, non-figured necks

Specials - USA, basswood flat tops in solid colours, one volume knob

Standards - USA, available with trem or stoptail, tone/volume knobs, birdseye necks

Custom Shops - lotsa different options.

The EXPs I've tried are good for a cheaper version of the US ones, but you can definitely feel the difference when you go Specials and upwards.

Re: New evh wolfgang!

I don't think anaybody's expecting him to change the world twice, just to continue on with new stuff. Anytime you hear him play outside of a concert setting he's playing the same licks he was doing 20 years ago. He would get eaten alive on a G3 tour standing next to guys like Paul Gilbert or Satch in an improv setting. That, to me, is the difference. When I listen to guys like Stach, Morse, Petrucci, Gilbert, etc. they're always pushing forward with their development. EVH has just stagnated and there are guys far more deserving of the attention he gets.

You are talking about technique development?? Cause it seems you are and i dont think that matters and that doesnt represent evolving. I dont think guitar players should aspire to have the best technical skills posible, they should aspire to transmit their feeling with their play the best way.

I mean, B.B King hasn't progressed at all since he started playing (well maybe he learned a few new licks) but is that necesary to be considered a good player?

I dont think so.

I do like Gilbert, Vai, Satch, etc, and i consider their playing to have lots of feeling, but the fact that they have better technique doesnt make them more relevant to me, is the music that makes one relevant, not the technique and i dare to say that VH music is WAY MORE RELEVANT than Vai, Satch or Gilbert music...if you are talking about influence.

And last, i dont think Vai, Satch, etc...had progress very much comparing their technique NOW to their technique 20 years ago, they were monsters then, and are monsters now, nothing has changed very much.

The only player i can recall that has evolved and it has been evident is Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest. He started playing pentatonics and blues-based solos, and then with time he incorporated a lot of new techniques and stuff, just listen to the solo in Painkiller...still....since Painkiller i havent seen any more evident progression in his playing, so i think its also difficult to ask a musician to improve technique constantly

OK SORRY THREAD STARTER! NO MORE HI-JACKING!!

And i would love to own an Axis, do the have an All access neck??

Re: New evh wolfgang!

Funny - is there any topic that gets more hits on a thread than EVH?

The guy has done more for guitar heavy music than anyone I can remember... other than Hendrix. I agree that he seems to bash the old for the new, but he seems to be a simpleton who just gets excited with his new toys.

The man is a legend and has in one way or another affected every player on this forum!

No, i'm not talking technique. I'm talking more along the lines of theory or originality with regard to expanding his horizons. Nobody's stating EVH isn't a good or great player or even disregarding his previous trendsetting accomplishments on the instrument.......only that he hasn't done a whole lot of jack since the at least the early 90's. I'm sure his technique is more than adequate to play whatever he wants, but I couldn't see him holding his own in an improv setting with any of the modern greats. I'm just tired of him being portrayed as some God-like mythical figure on the instrument when the reality is there are plenty of guys who could smoke him 10 ways from Sunday in every sense who are far more deserving of the attention he gets today.

Re: New evh wolfgang!

I'll get one sooner or later I'm sure, oh yes. All my guitars have Ed's sig on them except my Fender USA P-bass.

It's coincidence really. I just haven't found anything I like better. People hate the pickups, neck shapes, pegheads, body styles, general look. But not me. Nothing I've tried sounds better or plays better to me, from clean to chunk to metal to shred. Just haven't found anything beefier, sweeter, or smoother than these for what I'm trying to do on electric guitar.

  • My Ernie Ball EVH natural finish, though humbucker equipped, somehow has this cool "strattiness" to its sound, a thick, fat LP crunch but with a Fendery jangle. It's sound is hard to describe and it's magical.
  • Less stratty but smoother is my #1, a Custom Shop Peavey Wolfgang, vintage-burst, stop tail, rosewood board. I love this guitar so much it's almost perverted.
  • Long story goes with my collector, which is a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted black and purple metal flake Custom Shop Deluxe with ebony board, my design. Everything is custom, from the black pearl flame inlays, to the silver metal flake binding, and even all the logos and the dish on the peghead have the same silver metal flake. Check it out, there's even a pic of mine at NAMM 2003:

Re: New evh wolfgang!

The Peaveys seemed cheaply made compared to the EBMM.

Except they're not.

I have played both, not really the case although a lot people like to claim it. Mostly its because they can't get past Peavey's guitar making of previous decades imo. The Korean imports Peavey did I can't speak to. The American PV Wolfgang's are top shelf.

Indeed. The Korean ones are pretty good, too, actually.
