New Five String Bass Day!!!

JOLLY

Super Simonologist
Yaaaaaaaaaay!! So, I absolutely fell in love with Spector basses back around the beginning of the year. I finally found one of the sounds that I had been trying to achieve for years. I figured since my buddy Dave and I have been writing and recording a bit recently, I would buy a five string to go along with some of his songs. I knew I would buy a Spector. However, I had also posted about wondering if I should just tune a four string to BEAD instead. Well, Dystrust happened to notice that the Spector five string was 35" scale, and that sold me. Thank you once again Mr. Dystrust.

Well, it arrived today. I plugged it up and it sounded like crap....lol. But that is only because the strings on it seem to be the ones that came on it a couple of years ago. However, it plays fantastic!! I have another five string bass, and it's basically a piece of crap. I bought it at least 15 years ago. It's a Kramer Music Yo bass. It is what it is....a $250 bass or whatever I paid for it. Actually, I probably paid a lot more for it, but that's irrelevant, and I digress.

As aforementioned, the Spector Legend 5 Classic sounds like crap at the moment because of the old ass strings. However, it's playability is absolutely amazing!! I think the nut width on it is only a tad wider that the Legend 4 Classic that I have. It doesn't have this behemoth of a neck on it. It is rather comfortable to play.

I'm going to put some new strings on it here shortly, and if I don't get too buzzed up I will try and do a sound demo. I will be putting on some Dunlop Super Bright Stainless Steel strings on it. I love the way they sound with my Spector Legend 4 Classic, so I hope they sound the same way with this Legend 5 Classic. Also, seeing as how I had found my sound with the combination of the Spector Legend 4 Classic, the Dunlop Super Bright Stainless Steel Strings, and the SSD Pickups (instead of the EMG HZ), I made sure that this 5 string had the SSD pickups as well.

Well, alright....I'm gonna sip on some whisky, change the strings, and do some farting around while recording in a bit.

Yeah, I've never really been a five sting fan for certain things, but I like the way they sound on slower type songs, and that's one of the reasons I bought it.

Rock on! That's the same model I have, but mine is the color of your 4-string. It should serve you well!

I've got a pair of Duncan NYC Soapbars in it with series/split/parallel. If you ever want something different pickup-wise, I highly recommend them!

I've been playing the hell out of it. It sounds fantastic, especially since I restrung it with Dunlop Super Bright strings. I've got it tuned down a whole step, and even with the low string tuned to A, it still sounds nice and crisp, and isn't flubby playing or sounding at all.

Re: New Five String Bass Day!!!

There's some great deals out there right now. I've seen a few used five string models for $399.

Honestly, I can't afford it right now. I just bought a Line 6 Helix, power amp, and a 2x12 cab. I've been meaning to post it on here, but a combination of laziness and lack of time has been keeping me from it.
