New Fret Job Incoming!

Something I've been meaning to do for a while...

Took my Torino Red EC Strat in for a refret. Needed some Neck pocket work too (I got this a LONG time ago and way less knowledgeble about Fenders). Its getting SS 6100's as it needs a little more meat.

Also came into some time constraints so the Martin's there too getting that nut work I intended to do.

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

Nice. I'm planning on having my EC strat refretted with Jumbos too.

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

Thought I was a bit nuts by going for le Jumbo but the neck could have been a bit thicker.

The pocket's going to at least need a shim on the side. Looks like it might have been cut crooked - Oh well that will be fixed.

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

Dude, you won't be disappointed. I had one guitar refretted with SS 6000s probably 5 years ago and they're as slick and shiny as the day I picked it up. If I had the money, EVERYTHING I own would have ss.

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

I'm sold as can be on SS - 3 of 5 Suhrs in da crib have it. The other 2 will be getting it. Should have gone for it on the Martin too but EVO's solid.

its the 6100 on a 1st year Clapton part that makes me think I'm a touch crazy.

Good sign! Just got back with the Martin - A week earlier than promised. Much improved!!!

Was just going to go with a Graphtech but there was nothing suitable so went for bone.

Oh - Interesting thing the luthier was working on but he's not ready to release (not 100% sure) yet. Solid wood pickguards. Necks and bodies too.
Looked really nice.

Refurbished Clapton in 2 weeks!

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

I have 2 Ec Strats. Both have been refretted with 6105 fret wire. Never really warmed up to stainless. Feels odd under my fingers and in many cases too bright but I guess it depends on what you play through. I bought both of these around 88 I replaced the frets about 89 or. 90. I did #2 first just to be sure, then I replaced #1. Both. Are in excellent playing condition yet my #1 Strat us approaching a polish and crown but after 20+ years you have to expect it. New frets rock! I have a 68 SG THat is a 68 and I had her refretted last year vshe screams like she is a kid. And at 45 she STILL looks great!

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

This is Interesting - I remembered this was in the guitar but did not think anything of it. The luthier pointed this out when repairing the neck pocket.

Its a neat item but this time has my curiousity up. Factory - unlikely.

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

And she's back home looking, playing and sounding like a million bucks!

A couple of strums through my amp and the Lace Gold/Fender mid boost is much better than I remembered it.
My original photo is much clearer - something happened on the upload.

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

The above one is 25 years old. Specs are a bit different now.

Vintage Noiseless pickups rather than Lace Sensors. Same preamp. Neck shape might have changed slightly. Don't know if the TBX is still there.

Price - I Franklee don't know. I've had that one for over 20 years...

They do pop up on The Gear Page from time to time used. New, depends if you want to go Artist or Custom Shop.

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

Its FW57110-S according to Jescar's chart. Basically the same size as 6100

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

I need more experience with SS, but 6100 is perfect for me. Too big and the notes can go sharp if you fret too hard, too small and bends are rough because of fretboard friction. I never looked into frets too much for tone though. EVH says SS doesn't take anything away from the tone. I'd like to spring for SS when I need another refret.

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

Something to think about. Many luthiers won't refret with SS wire, or charge you an exhirbitant rate for it, claiming it damages their tools.

Jescar fret wire is still nickle silver, but a much harder compound than Dunlop- it's what PRS uses.theres also a gold Jescar fret wire that's hardness is between their nickle silver and stainless, so you get the added durability without the cost

Re: New Fret Job Incoming!

You're talking about EVO - I have it on my Martin. Nice stuff, supposedly leans towards stainless when it comes to hardness.

The burnishing trick also works with Nickel Silver frets - it can take divots out and extend fret life a bit. All you need is a steel spoon.
