New from PRS - If You're into Johnny Hiland...

PRS has unveiled the new Johnny Hiland model. He had started using a Swamp Ash Special while they were designing and manufacturing his sig model. What do you think?

Johnny Hiland Model News

It's nice, but I really don't see anything that special about it. It has PRS JH pickups and you can split the neck humbucker. They say it covers a wide range of sounds and you can even play Country with it. Makes me think the bridge pickup is voiced to sound like a DiMarzio Fred. I say that because the Fred in my guitar sounds like a big, fat Tele bridge pickup.

I didn't even know they still made the swamp ash special. But anyways, seems a lot to me like a CE 24 with out the rosewood board and a different set of pickups. I'm not really impressed, but then again, I've never been impressed by any of their signature models.

I really do like PRS, however, I kinda think they've hit a dead end as far as progress goes. They only have 3 body shapes (4 I guess if you count the hollow body as a separate shape) and it seems as though they've made every variation that they can/are going to with what they've got. And not to say that this will hurt their profits. I think they'll continue to do just fine. But I don't see any a PRS Vee or any other shape coming into the picture any time soon. As much as I love their guitars, they need to do something a little more daring... Like a custom 22 or 24 available in white with a smaller heel, black hardware and a floyd rose! When that day comes, I will buy another PRS.

Re: New from PRS - If You're into Johnny Hiland...

In seeing his Tele, I was expecting something really radical. It didn't happen.....

Re: New from PRS - If You're into Johnny Hiland...

when i first heard this awhile back i thought maybe they had came up with a teletype body and came up with something new... i'm a little dissapointed.

Re: New from PRS - If You're into Johnny Hiland...

I'm really unimpressed. I'm gonna stick with tele's man...that's where it's at :) Tele's and Strats...I think I'm just a die hard Fender fan....*Shrug*

Re: New from PRS - If You're into Johnny Hiland...

I really like this guy and although I can't see him with a PRS, I think he's kinda got an unfair rap in that everyone wants him to be a great tele-picker (and he is), but people have a hard time mixing that when he plays his slower ballads and harder rock. What's wrong with playing other stuff with other stuff???

As for the endorsements, who here wouldn't play a custom shop PRS for a few grand???? (and go home and pick up the tele):14:

I think PRS guitars work great for someone who's a tele player, wanting to also use humbucking guitars. I use my right hand fingers a lot, and PRS McCarties lend themselves well to that style, because of the string height off the body, and the articulation of all the notes. Just last night, I was playing my tele and McCarty, and found that I prefer fingerpicked stuff a lot on both those guitars, whereas it's not quite as good on a strat or LP, in comparison. This year, I may start playing my PRS's a lot more. They fit with my style really well, which is like a cross between bluesrock and country.

Man you're not kidding! He's a bigger gear whore than *any* of us here! Maybe you can get him to endorse one of your amps Scott!;)

Re: New from PRS - If You're into Johnny Hiland...

He sounded pretty good at the PRS booth this afternoon. :)

Re: New from PRS - If You're into Johnny Hiland...

He's got monster chops. For sure.

As far as getting endorsements for my stuff, I'd be honored and all that, but truth be told, I don't have time for a big demand.

As far as endorsements are concerned - when you're trying to make your living as a pro musician, every little bit helps....

Lol, I know. Just havin' some fun!

Yeah... when I saw this I was kinda shocked that ol' Johnny went to PRS. You just don't think of a blazin fast chicken picker on a PRS. Oh BTW... isn't Johnny blind?

he played very well, but I would say what I heard was closer to jazz then Country. I didn't stay for more than one tune though.

he's very fluid, an impressive player, didn't repeat himself, but from my perspective, I didn't hear a lot of variation in phrasing - everything was pretty linear
