New G&L: Doheny V12

So G&L hinted through Facebook posts that an MFD humbucker equipped Doheny was imminent; they snuck it in under the radar, these are already available for purchase ;)

If the gold one had a Saddle Lock bridge, I might not be able to resist. Love the old-school black crinkle and red/white switches:

Re: New G&L: Doheny V12

I'd was really disappointed by the Doheny when it was announced. I'd be totally into it if it had Jag/Jazzmaster wiring and bridge/vibrato. But it's basically just a Legacy with two Jazzmaster style MFDs.

That last bit is key, though. I love that there is now an MFD pickup using the Jazzmaster form. I WILL be putting them into a Jazzmaster at some point in the future.

Re: New G&L: Doheny V12

I already have a 'standard' Jazzmaster and Jaguar with vintage appointments- so if I got another guitar of that ilk, it'd have to be different anyway. I'd actually prefer a Saddle Lock bridge though, to change things up. I am somewhat bothered the Doheny abandons G&L's trad square neck joint for a Fender-style neck, with 21 frets.

I do wonder how close in practice the humbuckers are to F100 pickups under the covers- posts on G&L's Facebook indicate the wind at least differs somewhat. IMO they sound great above- nice and fat.

I wish G&L would strike a deal with Mastery to supply O.E.M. hardware for those who want a traditional Jag/JM rocker bridge and vibrato.

I like the DF Vibrato SO much better than the Jazz/Jag unit, which I think is a PITA, on several levels.

I'm really looking forward to trying a Doheny.

The DFV and Jazzmaster vibrato have in common for me that they are both pretty much 100% stable tuning-wise. They both do very different things well.

That said, I upgraded my Japanese Jaguar to use a vintage bridge and an AVRI vibrato. While the stock bridge didn't give me 90% of the problems it was 'supposed' to and I used it for about a decade- The vintage bridge is absolutely solid and trouble free. The stock bridge and vibrato on my Squier were both absolute unusable pieces of junk though. I can see how some of the import hardware might give them a bad reputation, but I'm now three vintage/AVRI bridge & vibrato swaps in on my offsets, and those guitars are now set and forget.

Back to the DFV- I have one on my SC3 and it's a marvel. But I'm not even using vibratos as much as I used to, and appreciate doing more things that work better on a hardtail, so I hope they come out with a Saddle Lock option outside the custom shop.

It certainly looks pretty. I like both the standard Jazzmaster and the normal Jaguar pickups better than those weird humbuckers though.

G&L posted the pickups are modeled somewhat after an MFD prototype Leo housed in a MusicMan cover - and that it's a relation to the F100 pickups that are some of my favorites. Apparently they don't use a full Jazzmaster-sized bobbin for each coil:
