New G5 in the house

I took a "working" vacation in Traverse City MI. Played a great gig to a full house which was amazing as Sponge was playing two blocks down the road. Went out on my buddys boat, played around in the woods, hooked my buddys son up with a grocery bag full of fireworks, took the wife out shopping and ate like pig. All and all a great vacation.

My buddy just happens to own an Apple dealership. I somehow talked him out of a dual processor 2.0 gig G5 with 1 gig of ram and a 160 gig HD with nothing more than a rubber check (it'll get covered today-lol) and a firm handshake.

I'm thinking my Protools rig will be running just a little smoother in the very near future. It's another slowdown in the recording process but I've been holding off doing too much work on my PC because I knew this day was coming soon. The cool thing is that it already has DV editing software and I have a fairly slick DV camera already and you can import DV into Protools, so now I can make music videos as well. Maybe I'll finally be able to put some of my broadcast schooling to work now. If I can edit 1" tape through a/b banks and switchers how hard can DV be. (gonna find out!)

Time to hunt up another monitor because the wife and my daughter aren't touching my new baby. Heck, it's been in the house for over 12 hours and I'm just now finishing up the reading. The actual computer is still in the box. She can have the PC ( P4 - 1.6g processor - 80g HD - 512m ram ) and my 4 y/o daughter can learn computer basics on that.

An external HD and a boatload of plug-ins are also on the list as well as one of the new Control|8 surfaces.

Yes kiddies it is sad but true, daddy has G.A.S. again in a bad way.

Re: New G5 in the house

Sweeeeeeeet. I haven't used one of the newer/newest generation Apples but from what I hear, they haul ass. Good score.

Re: New G5 in the house

This is really sad Robert imagine having the hots for a pc!! Pretty soon you will be telling us how curvaceous that body looks and how gentle and soothing that monitor is and that you can blaze your fingers effortlessly over the keyboard and it can go mega speed!! Does it have a flame or quilted maple top??

You just have to go back to guitars soon - otherwise you are heading for the funny farm :saeek:

Re: New G5 in the house

Hey man, sound like my set up. I got the 2 gig G5 w/ Protools HD accel 2.
Go for the Glyph external HD if u can. I've heard it's by far the most reliable hard drive to put u'r PT audio on.

Re: New G5 in the house

I'm posting from a dual 2GB G5 right now. Sweet machine, I'm sure you'll like it. And while it may not be everything Protools is, that new Mac should already have some powerful software on it. The iLife suite of a/v tools includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD & GarageBand. If you have a broadcast background you'll likely quickly outgrow some of the limitations of the iLife software, but I think you'll still find it very useful and incredibly easy to use. Good luck and have fun with it!

Re: New G5 in the house

It's up and running now and I have Protools and the factory bundle installed.

Now if I can just switch over the cable modem and get that right I'll be able to get started figuring out how and what this thing will do. The format looks simular to Windows but that seems to be where the simularity ends. I have the complete office suite and some other office software including Quickbooks and I don't have the faintest idea of how to make any of it work yet.

Even the OSX version of Protools is different so now I have to start reading all over again. Boys and their toys........

Re: New G5 in the house

Sounds so awesome. My girlfriend actually had to keep me from throwing my computer over the balcony last night, as I learned that my pictures were locked in, unable to be copied to the burner. A new computer is a priority for me right now. I've had it with cheapos. Your new computer is probably exactly what I'll be looking for. Nice ToyZ!!!!!!!

Re: New G5 in the house

GJ, this thing rocks and I'll be enjoying it alot more as I get it all cranking. So far I have my mail account running and the Protools stuff running. The set-up was too easy so now I just have to learn all the ropes.

The best part is that I no longer have to worry about grabbing a virsus and my pop-up issues are gone as well. I'll be in debt for the next two months as I pay it off but it's already been well worth the money.

All the Mac guys have been telling me how much better the Mac format is and I'm starting to see what they were talking about.

Re: New G5 in the house

I need to learn more about Macs.....I've always been a Windows, Intel kind of a guy....easy plug and play that has never let me down, although I know it has others.

Sounds like a nice rig Robert....we need some more music from you!

Re: New G5 in the house

man you had to go and tell me about that. I have wanted a new mac for a while now with pt on it. oh the gas.

Hope she treats you well.

Re: New G5 in the house

Can you say no more more pop-up ads?

I can, they magically disappeared!

No more virus control software either.

It loads massive programs like protools in a couple of seconds and the smaller programs load almost instantly.

Better yet, everything works as its supposed to and there are no more "report errors" or hotfix patches.

I think I'm in love........

Re: New G5 in the house

My 1st comp. was a Blue & white Mac G3, & I got my G5 last month. I dread the PC in my office @ school. One of these days I'll have to get a Power Book so I can kiss PC's goodbye for good.

I take it you're using Safari as your browser? It's nice and fast although it does lack some of the bells and whistles. BTW, Apple+K should toggle the pop-ups on/off. It may inadvertantly block legit popups at times but it's rare.

The virus thing is nice. You almost never have to worry about 'em. Although there was a worm that went around a couple years ago that disguised itself as a legit file and got in through the Qucktime autoplay feature. It was pretty nasty and disruptive. So it IS possible, just not very probable. The funny thing though is while most viruses don't affect Macs, Macs can be carriers and transmit 'em to PCs. But that's now their problem. ;)

The best part though, as you say, is that it just works. It lets you concentrate on the tools, not the OS. And while OS patches do come around every once in awhile, it's not nearly as often as Windows. And it is possible to crash stuff (like the crappy, new version of Illustrator) but crashes are rare.

Re: New G5 in the house

I'm using Internet Explorer as my browser and I plugged out of my PC directly into the Mac and it configured itself to what I was running before.

My Windows programs were always problematic and something was always either going down or running poorly.

So far I'm very impressed.

Re: New G5 in the house

Wow. It's so great to see so many people coming around to the Mac platform.

I remember just a couple of years ago there was a similar discussion on the old Duncan board and only a few of us used Macs. Most people on here were slagging them, but we Mac users knew what so many more know now.... the Macintosh operating system is the BEST. SO easy to use, organize, customize..... no viruses (for the most part), no crashes, 100% freedom and 100% intuitive (if you think "I bet I can just do THIS", you probably can).

The Mac absolutely can change a computer hater into a computer lover. It is a thing of genius and art. And it only gets better.

I think iTunes and the iPod had a LOT to do with the popularity among music lovers. Amongst musicians and artists the Mac was always the platform, but now so may are seeing the sheer simplicity for everyday tasks.

God bless Steve Jobs (a true visionary). He just had cancer surgery. Here's to a fast & speedy recovery. :newangel:

PS: Writing this from my 4 1/2 year old (2000) 400 Mhz Sawtooth G4 (which still runs great and is pretty much flawless). 1.5 GB RAM. OS 10.2.8 :D

Throw away Internet Explorer. It's old, slow, buggy, and isn't being developed anymore. Use Safari or download Camino from Mozilla.org.

Re: New G5 in the house

Nice score, Robert. I would like to return to the Mac world, but sadly, no one around here uses them.

Remember all the hype about Windows '95 when it was released? I saw an editorial cartoon that summed it up best:

Windows '95 = Mac '88
