New Gibson Customs launched!

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

Well, as usual, there will be hits and complete dumb@$$ery. And before we lose our crap about the prices - most don't sell for that listed price, but still stupidly overpriced.

Let's see....

Painted over = FAIL; Gibson does know that only Fender really did that, right? Maybe one color like Black over Gold top. And age the rest of it retards!

Custom w/ 490/498 = FAIL

Modern Double = More "Meh" than I can fathom. Especially at that price.

SG = Sweet

Firebird = Cool. I like the 'casting up' of that. But, as usual, retards didn't triple bind the headstock. Who TF runs that company?

Explorer/V = Excellent, but weren't they always? Again BINDING ON THE EXPLORER HEADSTOCK STUPIDS!!!!!!!!

No wonder I buy Deans....

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

I kinda dig the Explorer; I loved the look of the Lzzy Hale model that had LPC appointments, but they had skinny necks. For my tastes, an Explorer should have a beefy neck and a beefy tone.

I like the Firebird too- I have two Firebird Studios with full size humbuckers (not the stock Gibson ones though) and I like 'em. I actually had a late 60s Firebird years ago and sold it because I didn't like the sound of the skinny pickups. Even the mini humbuckers in a Deluxe sounded better to me, and I wasn't especially thrilled with those.

And to me, an SG Custom just has to have three pickups.

That double cutaway, you couldn't give me one.

I dunno... I kinda like the double cutaway, but not at anywhere even close to that price!

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

It'll migrate to the standard line, then to faded, then Epiphone over the course of a few years... only to be discontinued... then reissued once Bonamassa starts playing one in 2027.

With the FB "skinny pickups" you have to be thinking in the right league. It's not going to get a stereotypical Gibson sound. More like a fat Fender.

I really like that double cutaway. It has an old vibe with a fresh design. Prices are ridiculous

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

Dumb question maybe but is the "Ultra Modern Weight Relief" brand new for 2017? Noticed it on the Gibson site. The way they talk about it is so friggin markety-ish (is that a word?) that it always has me thinking that the world took another hit in the mahogany department. Or, maybe Gibson just went with a lesser grade due to cost. They make the point in an article about it that it doesn't save them anything because it is more labor intensive. It's a talking point they've used before. But they make the point twice this time. Yeah, I get it ... it takes more time for the CNC router to chew out more wood ...

Sounds like I'm bashing. I like Gibson but I guess I kind of am. Maybe if they routinely offered a couple of SOLID body LP's in the Tribute and/or Studio lines I wouldn't be so skeptical of it really just being about the wood.

Gibson went with a lesser grade and is now marketing it so they can charge you even more.

No bashing - just calling it what it is. Henry needs a new G-7 and higher quality at a lower price is a dumb way to fund that.

The marketing guys cost the same no matter what; Cheaper wood and more cost = Gibson Exec luxury. That's how Icon businesses run.

** Meanwhile my Dean's are still solid as can be....just sayin'

Yah, I agree- I think those are the only rail pickups Gibson ever made, though I could be wrong. Was expecting them to be more like P90s but they really are their own thing, and they need an amp dialed in especially for their character. I know some players love 'em. Have no idea why Gibson went with ceramics when they reissued the Firebird. Of course, I have no idea why Gibson has done a lot things over the past couple of decades. Their one big mistake was, they made their decisions without asking my advice first. They still make that mistake all the time. :33:

I love the vintage FB pickups... but that stands to reason because I've mostly been a Strat player up till recently. That chunky, kinda compressed, mids forward sound you get from a PAF sized humbucker does nothing for me. I like a bright, articulate pickup.

As for the pickups in the newer birds... those are an absolute turd sandwich. They're not even a good example of what they are. I was never in such a hurry to get rid of a pickup set as I was with those...

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

They had a set of different color double cutaways on their Instagram page...the comments were hysterical. People just don't seem to like them at all. To me, they look like a 3rd grader tried to draw a PRS and failed.
