New Gibson Customs launched!

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

They had a set of different color double cutaways on their Instagram page...the comments were hysterical. People just don't seem to like them at all. To me, they look like a 3rd grader tried to draw a PRS and failed.

I dunno... I've seen worse. They're more symmetrical than I like but they beat the alternative. A single cutaway solidbody guitar is, if you think about it, kinda dumb. I don't really like the way SGs look either but from an ergonomic standpoint it's a much better design than a Les Paul.

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

LOL!! Was just going to post on that.. A "road worn" les paul.. for the low price of nearly 6 grand.... sheesh..

I do love the looks of the Explorer as Id really like one with the block inlays, but not for that kinda money.. I had to laugh when they said taking it to "new sonic territory".. yet they are using the same old crummy pickups they have used for years.
At least come up with a special pickup for a special run... sheesh..

Agreed.
I'd probably just look for a used Lizzy Hale, Bill Kelliher, or a 2005 Explorer Pro.

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

Well, as usual, there will be hits and complete dumb@$$ery. And before we lose our crap about the prices - most don't sell for that listed price, but still stupidly overpriced.

Let's see....

Painted over = FAIL; Gibson does know that only Fender really did that, right? Maybe one color like Black over Gold top. And age the rest of it retards!

Custom w/ 490/498 = FAIL

Modern Double = More "Meh" than I can fathom. Especially at that price.

SG = Sweet

Firebird = Cool. I like the 'casting up' of that. But, as usual, retards didn't triple bind the headstock. Who TF runs that company?

Explorer/V = Excellent, but weren't they always? Again BINDING ON THE EXPLORER HEADSTOCK STUPIDS!!!!!!!!

No wonder I buy Deans....

The Explorer, V, and Firebirds look fantastic. I fully agree with you though on the lack of headstock binding on some. They would be pretty much perfect otherwise IMO!

Call me crazy I really dig them.

I do too, but I might change to white pickup rings and the orange knobs.

I wonder if, after they introduce the custom shop version, they might come out with a Gibson USA version for a more reasonable price. They could even do a studio with faux binding, that would look cool.

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

I am all for new designs, but it just seems like this one isn't finished. Those higher frets look painful to get to. I'd love to see the rejected designs.

Yeah, that cutaway doesn't really go deep enough now that you mention it. But then, look at an LP. There's no reason for a solidbody guitar to not be double cutaway. Why make it harder than it has to be?

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

Well, I thing it is hard for Gibson (and Fender) to be so tied to tradition. I mean, at some point, all the people who say how great those guitars were in the good ol days won't be around anymore, just as blues has vanished from contemporary rock guitar. Holding on to the past so tightly leaves little room for innovation, as it gets rejected by the very people keeping the companies afloat. Many Gibson fans hate the HP line. Many Fender fans hate the new modern Strats with the noiseless pickups. Completely new models have a hard time with their core fans. And sadly, if you are not a Gibson fan, I don't think this new shape is going to turn you into one.

I do like the overall look... if they'd deepen the cutaways both top and bottom and go with a headstock that pulls the strings straight through the nut (can anyone really make a logical argument for not doing that?) they'd have something. While they're at it they might think about a nice contoured neck heel which contrary to popular fiction isn't going to alter your tone or sustain one little bit.

I agree on the headstock. But the headstock is Gibson's #1 identifying mark. Little chance they will change that to something that makes more sense. I also agree that if the cutaways were deeper, it would be more functional, and look better. But then they just built a PRS.

Re: New Gibson Customs launched!

A guitar with such a lack of upper fret access has no business being called "modern".
