New Goth Guitar day!

My Gothic Explorer (Gibson, not Epi) was $1100 new. That was a lot for me in 1999. I have other guitars that play a little better, but it's still my favorite 6 string. The finish is indeed trash, very weak, but structurally speaking the guitar is still in great shape.

I stopped playing mine because I took a 17 year deep dive into Floyd Rose land. But now having picked it up again, I can't for the life of me grasp why I ever stopped playing it. It just fits like a glove.

I'll tell you the coolest thing about this guitar is that I only gave $200 for it.

Considering everything I've gotten out of my Explorer and everything we've been through together, I don't have even a slight regret about spending full-price money on it, but on the other hand I'm certain that it's not 5.5 times better than your new squeeze there. And in today's money, yikes, it would be more like $2k. But the memories are priceless!

I used my goth explorer absolutely to death! I wore the paint off of it.... That thing was a workhorse. Never had a bad day with that thing.

Final form?

That does seem like a lot. I was thinking more like $899.

The only models you could get in that price range were the cheaper stuff with the slab bodies. You have to account for what the price hike on Gibsons was like back in those days. Prior to the 2010's, you could easily pay 1.5x US prices over here. A Classic or a Standard at that time would've hovered somewhere around $2000 (in 2001 dollars, that is).

It evened out later, especially once everyone had to compete with Thomann. And - I assume - there was some sort of renegotiation on import fees or trade agreements at some point as well.
