NEW GUITAR ADVICE

Wazzapnin chaps and chapettes,

So I'm going to Valencia for 5 months end of August and am thinking of buying a cheap guitar there and then it at the end of my stay. Guitar going about $200 (very approximate), with following specs:

Must have tremolo bridge
Must have single coils or HSS. Only willing to get humbuckers if they come with coil-splitting function already installed.

Already have a Yamaha Pacifica (best guitar for that price in my opinion), so would probably avoid buying that to mix things up. I play blues, funk and rock, some jazz, so versatility is quite key. V interested in the squier Jaguar, but still a bit pricey (~$400 i think)

What guitar would you guys recommend?? Willing to consider anything so throw them options at me!

Regards,
Christian.

Haha, I was gonna say a Pacifica before finishing reading your post. Maybe a strat by Vintage Wilkinson?

Yeah I did check them out actually. For some reason I'm slightly skeptical about buying a strat-copy just because, since its a temporary guitar, I have this craving for something a bit different. Maybe a small time brand or something. A guitar that you dont see much of. It's a small time investment anyways.

But I will stikll consider strat-types!!

Re: NEW GUITAR ADVICE

At $200 it’s kind of hard to get into specifics. My best suggestion would be to hit pawnshops and used sections of local guitar stores. A decent $200 guitar is one of those “finding a diamond in the rough“ deals many times.

Normally I don’t mind buying a guitar online sight unseen, but in that price range I think I would rather try before I buy.

Re: NEW GUITAR ADVICE

The Pacifica is a bolt on yes? Why not pop the neck off, stuff it in your suit case and take it with you?

Re: NEW GUITAR ADVICE

Buy something used. You'll get more bang for your buck that way. Plenty of used Ibanez stuff around, hard to go wrong with that brand. Also, used PRS stuff is pretty available these days.

Re: NEW GUITAR ADVICE

Too many choices in that price range. A used Washburn, Cort, Ibanez or Yamaha could all be up your alley.

Was just reading up taking off the neck etc.. I see that some people claim that taking the neck off and on maywear the wood and ruin the connection between the neck and the body as the screws won't tighten up properly anymore.

How true is this? Anyone had any experience with taking necks off to travel?

Not at all true. Just don't overtighten it when putting it back together.

Some people even take the neck off just to get under the pickguard in order to save strings. I would advice against that as retightening does wear it, but there's no ill effects unless your doing that on a constant basis.

Re: NEW GUITAR ADVICE

Ibanez SA or Gio
Should be able 5o find a non locking term for around 200 new

You really should experience the wizard necks

Re: NEW GUITAR ADVICE

As for Slick. I bought one a while back and it needed a complete level and crown. So 200 became 300. Still a good axe for the money. Solid build, good pups...I like it a lot. So try before you buy...maybe I just got the odd dog

Re: NEW GUITAR ADVICE

All replies highly appretiated! Those Slick and Xaviere guitars look very interesting!

Think I'm going to take my mine by removing the neck and fitting it in my bag though, as someone suggested, to save cash (since I'm broke af). But thanks anyways!

Any advice or experience stories on bolt-on neck removal an re-attachment for travel ro anything else, please let me know!

Wait, you're flying and that's the problem?

Thats a non-issue, ALL airlines will allow you 1 guitar or bass gigbag as your main carryon (brazen customers like me have even gotten away with a two-guitar gigbag).... furthermore, anything that looks like a computer case or briefcase or 'manbag/purse' does NOT count as a second carryon.

And, the other unspoken secret? If your stuff still doesnt fit, airlines will generally let you walk in with any amount of plastic bags you can reasonably carry, as well as large items of clothing like winter coats or whatnot. (As long as you simply DO NOT ASK)

For example, flight optimization 101 for long visits to anywhere:
1) winter coat in hand
2) any heavy boots you need on feet (just take em off as soon as you're on the plane)
3) around 10 kg of crap in a 17" laptop bag
4) anything else that didnt fit in plastic bags in hand
5) gigbag slung over shoulder... you can also 'optimize' some other crap into the pockets

I've shamelessly walked onboard with like 40 kilos of stuff total as in-hand carryon

Well, there was a case just recently, of a woman being bumped from a flight because she had her $30,000 cello with her. Oh and she had paid for an extra seat for the cello. So you can never be quite sure how any particular airline is going to treat you if you fly with an instrument.
