New guitar choice - PRS CE vs Custom vs EBMM Petrucci

Hi all,

After 6 years of trying to bond with my Ibanez Jem 7vwh, its time to move on. Didn't quite like the tone of the evolution buckers, changed them out for Breeds, added in an ESP arming adjuster but it still doesn't sound quite right.

This is going to be my shred axe, which of the three would you recommend and why?

The Petrucci is much more ergonomic and suited towards pyrotechnics. So are the pickups.
You should be comparing the Petrucci to something like a Jackson or a ESP.

You can shred the **** out of a PRS (just ask Shawn Lane) or out of any guitar, really, but they're a bit bulky and thick and not very shred-conscious overall.

I probably would not pick a PRS for a shredder either (and I have 4) but "bulky and thick" is not a reason why. They are no thicker or bulky than an RG ( have one of those too) The shorter scale length and to a certain extent, the all mahogany design make them a little fat in the ass tonally for high gain shredding. Of the choices offered, I would look at the Petrucci model.

Well, that's what I meant. :)
The Petrucci is more streamlined towards that kind of playing.

Kinda like racing with a BMW M3, which will go fast, when you could race with a Ferrari Italia for a similar price. :D

anyone who says you can't shred on a PRS has not yet played a Custom 24.

I would pick a CE24 over a custom for shredding, simply because the note definition is so much better, and you would really hear all the details or the playing, even with super high gain and with incredible speed. Add the wide-thin neck, and it's going to be a very spreadable guitar.

I would go with either the CE or the EBMM. Both are great guitars, it's a question of taste.

Oh man... there's a thread in here about your top 5 current dream guitars, and The PRS CE22 and the EBMM Petrucci were both on my list.

Both are excellent instruments with a lot of strengths. This is probably something you'll need to decide for yourself. Are both guitars available at a local dealer for you to try out? Listen to the way they sound through your favorite amps and feel in your hands... those are the most important things.

Like I said, ideally I'd like to have one of each. The Petrucci will come with more powerful pickups... wether you like them or not is up to you. I have a Crunch Lab in my main axe and it works VERY well for what it does, which is a high-output, dynamic pickup for hard rock and metal.

I honestly couldn't decide between the two of them for you. Personally I'd pick the PRS because I've never owned one before but I like them very much and see if I could stick with it for the long term. Plus I like the 25" scale and the stock pickups sound great, not high output but very sweet.

However, the Petrucci has that peizo bridge thing going on which just makes for some super cool sounds.

ok I tried a PRS Custom 24 today. I was blown away by the tone and playability! Next up is the JP6! Wish me luck :)

Great man - it's nice to see somebody actually get out of their chair and go try something out instead of just asking about it!!!

I guess ur right... mainly because of the slightly finish on the CE necks. i find that gloss impedes you from achieving that "extra" mach speed. BUT then again... the EBMM Petrucci BFR's has that glossy neck.

I've played PRS wide-fats... custom and singlecuts for years, and i never had a problem. not that im a shredder or anything...:cool2:
