New Guitar Project - Headstock Repair ?

Re: New Guitar Project - Headstock Repair ?

And? Can anybody identify that bridge? No markings whatsoever. Looks like a Schaller type. But, I'm a rookie here.

I really like it. The saddles are in great shape.

Re: New Guitar Project - Headstock Repair ?

Thanks, I will. And, like I said, I'm skill building here. I just might have to get a completely straight cut to do this right. Oh, I do have a 90 deg cut in the neck, not photographed yet, which the new piece will butt to.

I'm learning. I'm having fun with it. I do a bit of MIG welding and have a bit of experience mating pieces together for the perfect weld, if you will. In this case, essentially welding wood.

My guitar store owner buddies tell me the tension will be approximately 40 lbs. Personally, I have no idea, and have read nothing stating this. However, I think the tight bond II glue joint, a couple of brads/screws whatever I decide, will be able to handle the job. These guys do great work.

Think I'm going to also get me a Japanese saw this weekend too, for fine work. After all, I will be doing a from scratch guitar project, starting this Fall/Winter.

no need for brads or screws.. if the two pieces of wood are a perfect fit the glue will hold just well enough on it's own.. just clamp the headstock repair for 24 hours after glueing..

MIG welding is fun.. my dad has one and we used it on his 55 chevy rebuild... i miss stick arc welding... i took a welding course 18 years ago that covered Arc and Gas torch welding... it was a fun course..

tool tip... a good Router is a guitar makers best friend... but be careful as it is also the most dangerous hand tool ever!!!!! i'm always nervous to this day when i fire my routers up... I have a few Porter Cables... One Porter Cable i have is a rare one but should still be able to get it on special order at Home Depot.. at least you could when i worked in the tool dept at my local home depot 7 years ago.. Not sure about modern times there now... but the Porter Cable D Handle base is the best router i have!!!! it has a huge D handle on it like a saw handle.... gives me some amazing controll!

I still want a great bandsaw oneday... only large tool i have bought for home is a drill press.. I plan to buy a bigger drill press oneday.... it is hard to find a good but cheap drill press that allows you to get into a bodies bridge area... the throat length is messed up... if a drill press company says it is an 8inch drill press there will only be 4 inches from the metal post to the drill bit. If it's a 10 inch it will only have 5 inches of clearance!!!! not enough room to get a body under a lot of them and get over to the bridge area... My Drill Press is an odd one... it is a bench top model but has the whole motor and everything mounted on a bar that slides out for extra clearance... cool feature... But i still want a floor model drill press... i use the ones at work for large jobs anyways.

Yup, welding is really cool. I'm wanting to take the local community college class, perhaps this Winter.

I picked up a bandsaw on Friday evening. It's great for guitar repair type work. I practiced a bunch with it yesterday.

I need more practice with the router, and the sander. Ruined my little replacement piece yesterday with vertical sander.

Tonight I cut a new piece on the new bandsaw.
