New Guitar Project

Re: New Guitar Project

Thanks! And will do! The weight is very good and I love the grain–probably gonna go with a Cherry Stain. :)

Re: New Guitar Project

Thanks! Time will tell if its what I want in the end–but I'm sure it will be a good foundation that I can tweak to my liking. :D

Re: New Guitar Project

Just wanted to put an update as its been a while. Went with an oil hand rubbed finish on the Mahogany body. Warmoth neck, Mahogany with Rosewood fretboard, 12" straight radius. While the headstock is the CBS Strat model, it will be tweaked (cut a little smaller) by a local luthier who is going to set up the guitar.

Wow cool man, Hey how did you mount the buckers? and how do you adjust height?

I like the headstock as is it looks awesome.

Man that's looking sweet... nice job!

Thank you so very much! I can't wait to get it wired up and setup! My luthier is gonna tweak the neck a little--shave the sides of the fretboard/frets to give it a smoother edge. I'm thinking of nitro coat on the headstock and then sand the back of the neck. I'm excited about finishing this project!

Here's how there are mounted right now

The Gibson pickups have longer "feet" or whatever you call that metal part that mounts to the body, and so the routing had to be deepened to accommodate them. Being solid mahogany it wasn't a problem--just had to make sure the deeper route didn't interfere with the back routing for the strat tremolo cavity...thankfully it didn't.

I really like the direct mount but will probably end up with mounting rings. Would you recommend something different?

Re: New Guitar Project

Yeah i have a great method for direct mounting pickups with easy on the fly height adjustment. Its never been thought of before but it by far the easiest way to do it imo. You can either use inserted studs or a humbucker bassplate to mount them.

That diagram explains the entire process ^^

Here is the trick you modify a height screw by filling away some of the thread at the top. They also will need to be shortened. And in addition to that you can shim the plate up so you get more room to play with.

Mount a plate or threaded insert.

The rig out

The once its all installed you can raise and lower the pickup just the same as if it was in a ring.

Just remember this was a kramersteen idea ^^

Dude that is awesome! Thank you for sharing! Pardon my ignorance, but can I just buy the metal plates on like eBay or something? In your opinion, does direct mount vs. pickup rings have any impact on tone/sound? Again thank you for sharing!

I think you can get them from stewmac for cheap, Its just a humbcuker baseplate.

No i dont think direct mounting adds any audible difference but it looks cool.

My solution is a whole heap better than this futone crap. What hassle to change the height of the pickup. Funny thing is tho you could even use the mod screw method on the fu tone setup haha

I will look into Stewmac for the plate...I really like the look of this one direct mounted...but I also like the looks of mounting rings...I will mull it over. lol

And am I not thinking straight or did he just go through all of that work to add a direct mount just to finish it off by adding the mounting ring back on?

Yeah that's beyond me hey. Maybe the tone difference is audible to others, what ya think?

looks good man.

are you gonna get the headstock cut down to a regular non-CBS shape or something else?

Yes, there is a local luthier in Atlanta who builds guitars and he does all the "heavy lifting" in my guitar projects. He is going to set up the guitar, roll the edges of the frets/fretboard, etc. he is going to put his decal on the headstock so the head stock can't be the Fender modern shape--he will trim up the CBS one down a bit, will look similar to a Fender modern but enough off that his name can be put on it.
