New Guitar Project

Re: New Guitar Project

I really like that. I want that. I could gig with that.

You actually used light tuners on a modern build. +1

Also kudos to kramersteen for not only being friendly and helpful but also going so far as to produce pics and diagrams. Don't you know you're supposed to be critical and supercilious but never helpful? Remember where you are man.

Re: New Guitar Project

Thank you very much! I love the Gotoh vintage style tuners--looks great and works even better!

And yes, Kramersteen is awesome! I ultimately decided on pickup rings but nearly went with his method for direct mount.

Re: New Guitar Project

Adam is a pretty sharp guitar guy and most likely has found some benefit with the FU brass mount. While he is also totally nuts it is in the 100% good way and if you want to know what, where and why give him a call he will be happy to talk to you about it I am sure.

Re: New Guitar Project

Yeah i have a great method for direct mounting pickups with easy on the fly height adjustment. Its never been thought of before but it by far the easiest way to do it imo. You can either use inserted studs or a humbucker bassplate to mount them.

That diagram explains the entire process ^^

Here is the trick you modify a height screw by filling away some of the thread at the top. They also will need to be shortened. And in addition to that you can shim the plate up so you get more room to play with.

Mount a plate or threaded insert.

The rig out

The once its all installed you can raise and lower the pickup just the same as if it was in a ring.

Just remember this was a kramersteen idea ^^

Bumping this thread up because I wanted to see this diagram by the man Kramersteen...probably going to do this on my current project

Re: New Guitar Project

Thanks for bumping this. I like how he used a humbucker base plate to mount it.

Re: New Guitar Project

Most welcome! And I like how he did it too. Planning on doing it to my newest project
I look forward to hearing how that works for you. At this time I don't have a guitar without a pickguard but that could change when I build another one.

Thanks, if you are interested, the project is a Walnut San Dimas. I have a thread on it. I brought this one forward because I wanted to see how Kramersteen did the direct mount. After spending big bucks modding guitars that cost a lot and still being disastified with the end result, I personally found building a guitar my way was the most rewording and best bang for the buck. And I recommend a pickguard-less guitar, they look awesome!

Re: New Guitar Project

Thanks for that. Yes, I like them without a pickguard, too. I just never built one that way yet. Right now I'm busy modding a less expensive one but that's almost finished. I may have to get going on another project after that.

Re: New Guitar Project

Hope the current project turns out awesome and hope you can pickup a new project afterwards!

I vowed to only have one project at a time but ended up with two...trying to focus my attention on the Walnut San Dimas Style first and then work on my Basswood Project...hard to bounce around multiple projects. lol

Re: New Guitar Project

I have to watch the number also. Of course, a guy once told me to start a new project whenever you can, you can finish them any day of the week. :lmao:

Mine is coming along fine. All new electronics which makes a world of difference. A little too warm sounding for my tastes with the rosewood fretboard but have a new roasted maple neck on the way.

Curious about your basswood project. Most people steer away from basswood.

The roasted maple neck should be what you are looking for if you don't want the warmth of rosewood.

My basswood project is an HSH or HH strat, 1 Piece Basswood body, Wooden Pickguard, Roasted Maple Neck with Rosewood Board. My favorite pickup combination is Basswood with a DiMarzio Liquifire in the neck and a SD Screamin Demon in the bridge...sounds best in Basswood, IMO. I don't like a JB in Basswood but love this pickup combination...I believe most of Joe Satriani's guitars are Basswood...

Re: New Guitar Project

Sounds interesting, for sure. Haven't heard the Liquifire. I'll go check them out on youtube. Have fun with that one. And the San Dimas.

Thanks! It's a John Petrucci pickup...usually coupled with the Crunch Lab. I didn't care for the Crunch Lab in the JP Set I had but loved the Liquifire–great neck pickup.

Re: New Guitar Project

I have only done that baseplate trick once. I think its a great idea. :18: My routing wont be so open next time.

You were supposed to say that you do it on all of your guitars! :smack: lol So am I going to be like the second person in the world to attempt such a feat?

Haha yeah well i will try it again this year. Its going to be alright. maybe fill the mounting ring holes in last?

Ha! Excellent advice! I will definitely fill in the mounting rings holes last! Can always revert to that if I fall face first!
