Once again, suplus of cash, blah blah blah blah. I've got two sevens at the moment, and neither is reallly doing much for me. The first is my carvin. Great guitar, but I'm tired of fiighting with the floyd. The other's a schecter hellraiser, and EMG's aint my thing. So I'm gonna sell em both and get somthing that I'll really like, and wont have to fight with.

So, I have two options: another hardtail carvin 7, or a warmoth 7.

The carvin would be tricked out like so: DC 727, Abalone block inlays, mahogony body, maple neck, flame koa top, clear finish.

Pros: Would be finished faster, marginally cheaper, knowledge that I like carvin 7's.
Cons: Stock pickups would have to go, and putting duncans in would involve a trip to my luthier since carvin makes their pickup routes oh-so-tiny.

The Warmoth would be tricked out like so:

Carved top 7, Black Limba back, flame maple top, Tiger eye finish, maple neck, ebony fretboard.

Pros: Black limba, 'nuff said bout that.
Cons: Would take longer to build, never played one before, marginally more expensive.

Of course resale value on both is likely to be ****.

So, what would ya'll do? Do the sure thing and stick with carvin, or take a chance on a potentially much-more-rockin axe?

Let there be a poll :smokin: .

Re: New guitars thread #2 of 2: 7 string, Carvin or Warmoth?

I know that this board has one big collective hard-on for Warmoth, but I'm personally not a fan. I love those Carvin 7s, I'd take that any day.

Definitely get the Carvin, the scale length that Warmoth has for 7 strings is retarded, 25" and 28 5/8"? I mean wtf.

Definitely a valid point. The scale legnth is the main reason why I'm not immediately jumpin on the warmoth. 28 5/8ths" is just wayyyy too long. 25" I'm a little sketchy on. I use a .060 for the low B, and on my carvin it aint too bad...but, I dunno if it'd still be cool with a shorter scale legnth.

I know that you won't put up with the floyd. But have you thought about trying the tremol-no or freelok? It would enable you to put your guitar in "hardtail mode". But you said you got the cash...you want to buy me a carvin???? :-)

LOL. Sure man, just gimmie your address, and I'll send ya a money order for the amount of whatever guitar you want. Naturally it'll be a couple of thousand dollars over...If I could just get you to wire the remainder to my colleauge (whom I owe money) in benmark. Yes...that'll do nicely. :D

Now in serious mode:

I could just block the trem on my carvin...But I'd rather not have to deal with the string locks and everything. Same goes for the tremolo-no and all.

The idea of having a big chunk of wood missing in my guitar for a tremolo system that I dont even use bothers me too. I'd rather just get a new one and not have to worry about it ;).

I'm not familiar enough with Carvin to vote one way or another, but I will say that despite the high quality parts that Warmoth creates, if they don't offer the options that will make you happy, then don't buy from them. The whole point of building a custom guitar is so you don't have to settle on anything. If they don't offer a scale length that will make you happy, go with Carvin.

No brainer: Carvin. Those are silly scale lengths for a Warmoth 7-string. 25" ? Really?

Pull the trigger.

Re: New guitars thread #2 of 2: 7 string, Carvin or Warmoth?

I just prefer Warmoth because then you get to outline everything you want, and you can pick 25.5" or 24.75" scale. I've yet to shop at either store, but I prefer Warmoth at least because the website is easier to navigate (even if the menu java lags most if not all computers I've surfed it on).

He wants a 7 string, which Warmoth doesn't offer at 24.75 or 25.5". The only 7 string scales they have are 25" and 28.625".

Re: New guitars thread #2 of 2: 7 string, Carvin or Warmoth?

I'm very happy with my Carvin DC727C.
I'm happy with all my Carvins period.
Carvin's been good to me.
Any issues or questions I've had, they've been quick to resolve to my satisfaction.

My '05 Dc727c is actually a replacement for my '02.
The '02 developed a truss rod problem.
I sent it back.
It was still under warranty.
The looked it over and just built me an entire new guitar.
The '05.
No questions asked.
Only thing I had to pay for was the return shipping of the '02.

Re: New guitars thread #2 of 2: 7 string, Carvin or Warmoth?

As for pickups.
What year is your current DC 7 ?
About a year ago they switched from using ceramic pickups to alnico pickups on the 7s.

Another thing you could do, instead of having the guitar routed for
aftermarket pickups, you could have the Carvins rewound by
someone that does rewinding.

Another pro to the Carvin.
Neck through.
Easier access to upper frets.

Re: New guitars thread #2 of 2: 7 string, Carvin or Warmoth?

Mines an 05 747c. I'm pretty sure it originally had the alnico pickups in it...but they really didnt do anything for me. Once I put some duncans in it came alive.

I'll probably end up goin with the carvin...if just for the sake of simplicity. Putting together a warmoth would take a lot more work. It'll be some time before I come to a solid decision though.

Re: New guitars thread #2 of 2: 7 string, Carvin or Warmoth?

Warmoth wins already on the scale length, anything under 27" willl only produce mud on the low B IMO ;)

hahahahahahaha, sorry but I have to laugh. Simple difference of opinion but still.

25.5" is fine for B, Jeff and Mike from Devildriver uses 24.75" and 25.5" scale guitars and just listen to their tone.

No thanks...had one of their 6-string baris a while back. I'm a pretty big guy...I got pretty big hands...but that thing was just rediculously uncomfortable to play on. A .060 on the B on a 25.5" scale is fine by me ;).

Re: New guitars thread #2 of 2: 7 string, Carvin or Warmoth?

I have to disagree on the tightens of the low B on baritone scales... it may feel tighter, but honestly, I've found shorter scales to sound tighter, especially recorded.
